Getting tired of point and condenser trouble. Is electronic ignition the way to go?? Should I change to a hotter coil if I make the change? Maybe there are better ways to spend tractor money than doing this. What do you think??? Thanks for the help-----

I don't know what you mean when you say points and condensor troubles. Are you talking about normal wear, or are you changing your points several times a year? You can plan on spending a little over $100 to convert to electronic ignition. Figure out how many point changes you will need to make to pay for that. Also, it is best that you convert to 12 volts for electronic ignition. Some systems are available for 6 volts, but once you purchase your electronic system, you are locked in to whatever you have.

On the plus side: Once you install electronic ignition, it is virtually maintenance-free. You get a slightly hotter spark, too. The engine stays in tune much longer.

One last consideration: If you are burning through lots of points, your coil may be your problem. This will need to be corrected, no matter what system you decide to go with.

Wayne - My experience is the stock IHC ignition system is pretty robust. So long the distributor is kept reasonably clean and dry inside it’ll give many hundreds of hours of service without attention. And the stock system provides reliable starting and running in virtually all conditions – just like the original designers intended.

About the only situation where electronic ignition offers an advantage is high performance service such as pulling - electronic ignition’s higher output voltage makes it better suited for high compression/high RPM than the stock system. Also electronic ignition eliminates the need for periodic breaker point adjustment/replacement, just as you suggest. However it being electronic, electronic ignition is susceptible to failure from voltage spikes, reversed battery connections, wiring errors, etc – things which have no effect whatsoever on a stock ignition system. And electronic ignition kits are not exactly cheap!

Bottom line: Unless you are into competitive pulling in the modified classes you’ll be fine with the stock system. Simply make sure the distributor is clean inside and is sealed up well (to keep dirt, oil, water, etc out) - it’ll work fine for you.

is your tractor 6 volts or has it been converted to 12, if 12, change your condenser and coil to 12 volts adjust to the proper settings this should cure the problems. if 6 volts, electronic ignition would be a waste. make sure every thinge is 6 volts and in good shape. wireing and plug wires included, weather seal and it should run great

Could be that your distrib is wore out. I had the same trouble with my '44 H, until I spent about $40 to have the distrib gone through. New shaft, bushings & seals & no more problems. (My $0.02 worth. jal-SD)

Wayne in Iowa;

We had 1 M Farmall that gave us ignition prolems. But local mechanic did a half___ 12 volt conversion. On the other M I converted it to 12 volt and electronic ignition. Worked fine,no problems.
