IH 240 engine miss

I've got an engine problem with my '60 IH 240 utility tractor. When the temperature gage gets to about 140, the engine starts to miss badly. I've rebuilt the carb, replaced the coil, points, plugs, plug wires, and dist. cap. Fresh plugs seem to help for a while, but don't last long. Don't know if it's related, but my radiator leaks badly, so I run it with the cap loose, or the coolant would be gone quickly.

Any ideas?

Hi, My grandfather had this problem after letting neighbors borrow his tractor. Calves had chewed the wiring on a TO-30 tractor and they had 'repaired' the damage. If you haven't found your problem to be something else by now, check the wiring at the coil as to polarity. The neighbors had wired the coil backwards causing the spark to jump backwards at the plugs. It would start and run ok but would begin missing as the engine warmed up and die after about 30 minutes without restart until the engine was stone cold. Hope this helps you.

Had a similar problem on an 8 N with a leaking waterpump. When the engine reached a point where the thermostat started to let the coolant circulate, the fan would distribute a fine mist of coolant across the exterior surface of the distributor cap and the engine would start to miss. If you idled the engine down and dismounted from the tractor the engine heat would immediately dry the exterior of the cap and their would be no evidence as to the source of the miss. Fix the leak and the miss will most likely mysteriously quite. Post your results. Good luck

Sounds like a head gasket to me.Where is the water going?

The radiator leaks at the solder joints on the radiator end caps. If the cap is screwed on, the system pressure blows the coolant out.

I don't *think* it's a head gasket leak, cuz the plugs don't foul. Is there another way to check for this besides replacing the gasket and/or removing/checking for a cracked head?

Thx

B. Rust, Check the oil after a warmup period, if it's milky looking good chance you have a blown head gasket. To check a cold engine, open the oil drain plug "very slowly" to see what comes out first. water or oil. As oil is lighter than water you should get water "first" if the head gasket is gone. My opinion is you have the misting problem over the wiring/dist. causing the rough running as it doesn't take much dampness to arc across escially with graphite filiment wiring. Good luck. FB
