My Farmall 100 has a rough time getting in gear. When the clutch is fully depressed, I usually have to hold it for 10-15 secondsand keep trying to get it in gear. Usually, I end up still having to grind it a bit and force it into gear. Based on what I have read, it sounds like there is an easy way to tighten some yoke rod or toggle the yoke rod but it isn't clear. Hopefully, I don't have to take the tractor completely apart to tighten the clutch (which I believe is the problem). Any thoughts?

Just went through this with my newly acquired 100. Adjusted the clutch (it was releasing 1/4" from the bottom). Oil was contaminated, changed it and it shifts perfectly. Some would not agree but on a tractor this old I use 140 weight it seems to take a few years off of trannys and final drives.

JD, How did you go about adjusting the clutch? Ramon

Ramon: Haas has the proper ideas for diagnosing your problem. It could well be your transmission oil too light, could be your release bearing or could be pilot bushing. Release bearing if bad should make noise when ever clutch is depressed. The pilot bushing if bad will make its noise when clutch is depressed and tractor is in gear. Note the difference in those two statments.

Probably the clutch pilot bearing is tight or has a rough spot on the shaft or bearing. Thus there is some friction there that is enough to keep the transmission spinning when you depress the clutch. If after it is in gear, you can stop the tractor and and then change gears without grinding, it's probably the pilot bearing. If not, it could be the clutch adjustment.

Adjust the clutch per manual. Also too thin of an oil in the tranny can cause the gears to spin for an excessive abount of time after the clutch is depressed if in neutral.

Unfortunately, I don't have a manual. If someone could describe or provide a brief synopsis, that would be great. I can't imagine it's too complicated (although I have been known to be wrong).

Ramon, As you sit on the tractor, to your left, you will see the arm that is attached to the left brake lever. Just below that arm is a pipe plug, take that plug out while the tractor is on level ground. The transmission fluid should be level with the bottom of that tapped hole. Also, Ben mentioned the weight of the gear lube you are using. I use 90wt. By using a heavier weight lube you will slow those gears down to some degree making it easier to get into gear.
