Info needed: Farmall B model

A friend of mine has purchased a Farmall "B" tractor. He has ordered a manual, but will not get it for a few days. What should the oil pressure be when idling and at full RPM? The tractor has the rear wheels spaced very far apart. The left axle housing looks very long. It is a tricycle (narrow)front end. Do all "B" models have the rear wheels spaced far apart, or is this one for cultivating or some other special purpose? Do these tractors have a water pump or they "thermo-syphon" cooling water circulation? He would like to use this tractor to pull a 5 foot pull type brush hog to mow grass, weeds, and pasture but not to "clear ground" or cut heavy brush or "small trees". Is this tractor capable of this task? Thanks for any and all help that you can provide.

My “B” will run about 20-25 lbs oil pressure at idle warm. At one time it had bad oil pressure and it was due mostly to a bad gasket in the oil pump. If after checking out the oil pump you still have bad pressure, it may be due to crankshaft or camshaft bearings being too loose. Many of the older tractors were overhauled and the camshaft bearings were never replaced, and the crankshaft bearings were replaced with undersized bearings. A lot of the older “do-it-yourselfers” didn’t worry about if the crankshaft was round or not. If the Oil pressure is in the red, there is a problem somewhere and it is probably not because of too light an oil in the crankcase.

Good luck.

Used to mow 80 acres of CRP with a B and 5' brush hog. The B would handle the tall "grass" in low quite well, 2nd was out of the question.

Thermo-syphon. Suggest that the cooling system be flushed if you haven't done so. The therom-syphon system has a tendency to build up crud around the back cylinder liners. This caused scoring of the pistons.

Great little tractor, Wish I still had it.

Thanks for the information. We already got an overiding clutch and are very glad that we did. So far my friend is happy with the tractor. He has been using the 5 foot brush hog in 1'st and 2'nd gear mostly and in very light weeds and open ground in 3'rd gear. I was supprised that it handled it as well as it did. The brush hog is in very good shape and the blades are "SHARP" which probably helps. Thanks again for the information.

Sometimes these old tractors have very low oil pressure, especially when hot. Mine ran in the red when hat. I rebuilt the oil pump and it's much better. I recommend this if your going to use it hard. You need to remove the oil pan (and the verticle plate behind it). Replace the bottom plate of the oil pump ($100 or so) at the IH dealer. Don't forget a new oil pan gasket. You can vary the rear wheel space by "dishing" the wheel hub in or out. Also the wheels can be bolted to the inside or utside of the hub. The wheels (and tires) can be swapped side to side to as the mounting lugs are offset on the wheel. Left and right axle should be the same length. You may be OK with a 5' mower in light going but you'll need an overrunning clutch/PTO adaptor. Good luck. DAve.

You might save some money by first checking to see if it has one or two paper gaskets in the oil pump. If it has two, you could try removing one and seeing if it helps. Also take the oil pump cover and put it on a piece of glass to see if it's flat. It may be a little warped, you can often sand them flat again, instead of replacing the cover. My B runs very low pressure, but it's a little better now since I had the pump apart and put it together with just one gasket.

Forgot to mention that they came from the factory with thermo siphon cooling. The water pump from Super A/C will fit.
