I had the low idle about 700 and the fast idle right where it should be on my 184 cub. Everything warmed up and running fine. I took it out of the shop and cut grass for about 15 minutes and it started surging at fast idle. Now what? I'm about to give up.

There is a screw with a jam nut at the front of the gov. That screw is an adjustment to stop surge. If it is surging turn that screw in slightly til surge just stops. You haven't elaborated on what work you have done to fix
the gov. If this adjustment does not work you may have aproblen in the gov or something is not quite right with the carb. I assume you have adjusted the speed screw at the top of the gov to obtain the no load high speed setting (full forward on the throttle hand lever.

I didn't need to adjust the gov. for top end as it was already set according to the tach. The problem I was having with it not idling down was because someone had a makshift butterfly valve in the carb that was bent and didn't fit right. I worked with it today to make it fit right and straightened it out. That left me adjust the idle to within 100 rpms of where it is supposed to be. When I had the gov. apart I could find no problem with it at all. The movement of everything was very free and nothing worn. I was talking to a couple of good mechanics this afternoon and now I want to go run it again. If it runs good and then acts up after it gets good and warm they said it could be the condensor. If it's having a fit right away it's probably in the governor.

Thanks for the help. I'll post back to let you all know how it goes.

That surge bumper adjustment at the front of the gov should fix it if the engine is otherwise running in good order. If you can stop the surge by holding the gov linkage steady at full throttle on the throttle handle the surge bumper screw needs to be tweaked in just til the surge stops. If you tighten the bumper too tight it won't surge but the governor won't work properly.
You'll see. You won't break it. It's a simple adjustment. If it does not work you have a problem elsewhere possibly an air leak in the carb or manifold or a fuel delivery problem or an ignition problem, etc., etc...

I went out tonight and mowed about an acre and a half and the thing ran like a champ. You tell me? I wanted to keep mowing but, there was a wire off the light switch so I quit. Too wet anyway. I know about the bumper spring and I do have a manual. I tried adjusting that earlier today when it took it's fit and nothing doing. It was still sugre city. It was cooler tonight so it could be a condensor. Maybe? I don't know. This thing is definetly female.... tempermental as all get out.

I hope it works good tomorrow as I still have about 2 & 1/2 acres to mow. If I don't get it mowed soon I'll have to rake and bale it. What do you think it would cost to pave about four acres?

Well ok, just keep at it you will get it straightened out. I had a Cub for about 5 years.
It always ran great. Yours can too. Many times it's just a good idea to take the time to go thru the fuel system with a good cleaning flushing of the fuel tank and cleaning/rebuilding the carb. Same time do a complete electrical tune up, points, plugs, comdensor, rotor, wires, cap. It's not that expensive or hard to just do the whole thing and have it done. Then have some peace of mind it should run good for a long while. I like to do it this way so I don't have the seemingly constant hassle of the machine not running right or quitting on me and me having to work on it right when I want it working my chores.

If it is a C-60 and it is surging, most likely you got governor problems. Make sure that the spring is clean and moves freely when the shaft is rotated. Make sure that the linkages are clean and has little or no play in it.

If you go to the link below, then click on the Numbered Cubs, there is info on the 154. It should apply also to the 184/185 series. The TC-131 Parts Manual should help with diagrams and directions. Should be the same procedures.

Hope this helps
