Recent purchase of an IH 454. Misses and runs very rough. Had injectors rebuilt, no help. Removed Injector pump and sent to rebuild shop reinstalled, no help. There is no blow by and cam seems ok so for now I am ruling out the valves unless it is adjustment. The pump looked as if it had been removed before or possibly an engine tear down. Does anyone know how these 454"s are timed, like do they have gears in front of the engine that must be aligned properly. Maybe its time for purchase of full set of manuals. Any insight on the 454"s would be greatly appreciated. Someone may have been saving this one for me.

Hi Bob, if the 454D is out of time it will be hard to start. If it is timed to slow you will have to crank the engine several times with the starter before it starts. Also it will blow a lot of smoke and a sooty oily compound will collect in the muffler.

If it is timed to fast it will kick back on the starter when you attempt to start the engine.

I can give you two methods of timing it, one by the book and the other by sight and sound.

P.S. If the engine was recently overhauled, new rings, sleeves honed it will take about 25 hrs. of working the engine before it will run correctly.

The other common occurrance with this engine is a broken piston ring but usually happens with the first year of life. A broken ring causes oil consumption if it is oil ring or loss of compression if one of the other rings. Loss of compression will cause smoking, rough idle lack of power. Do an archive search on Klanger for his 454 story.

Keep us posted.

General for leaking valves is to shut off the fuel then crank the engine over. If you hear hissing in the exhaust or intake, you have a leaking valve(s). Check the valve adjustment. With the engine running, crack injector lines loose one by one to see which cylinder(s) is(are) missing. Then move injectors around to see if the miss moves with the injector or stays with the same cylinder. If the miss moves, replace the injector. If the miss stays, double check valve adjustment and if correct, you probably have a leaky valve and need to pull the head.
