Super A smoking badly on cold start

My 49 SA is smoking a lot on a cold start. It's blue oil smoke, and clears up after it warms up. It's using oil, but you can't see hardly any smoke when it's working & warmed up. I checked the compression today, (engine cold) and see about 80 lbs in each cyl. While cranking, they all spike up to 80, and immediately fall to about 55 before the next compression stroke. Adding oil to the cyl and checking again didn't seem to make any difference. I'm thinking about removing the head & sending it out for an overhaul anyway, but not sure it's ready for a sleeve kit just yet. It was overhauled back in the early 60's & is mainly a mowing tractor now. What should I be seeing with the compression tester? Can't remember is these have valve stem seals or not.

When you pull the head feel for a ridge at the top of the sleeve if there a ridge you might as well put if new sleeves pistons and bearings while you have it apart. 80 psi is low for compression and if the valve guides are worn out it's a good bet the rest is not far behind. The early 60's was 40 years ago if you do a proper job now you won't have to touch it for 40 more. my 2cents.

I'd imagine it does need pistons & liners. It runs smooth & quiet, and I put in conn. rod inserts a few years ago when I had the pan off to paint. The old ones had 3-60 date codes on them, and were in good shape, but I put it together with new ones, std. size. I didn't look at the mains, but they should be OK. Who has the best deal out there on sleeve sets?

DDG, I have to agree with Stan, on his feelings on which way you should go. Im in the process of doing a 49 Super A over also, ever so slowly and I was getting about 110 lbs in each cylinder after I got the motor running. Im not going to touch it with that compression! The important thing is that all your cylinders are close to the same reading. I would have the head done for know as Stan suggested and go from there down the road! Good Luck and keep us posted.

If adding oil to cylinder didn't bring up compression, it sounds like you need a valve job. The smoke could be from oil seeping into the cylinders through the valves, and that would be why you notice it on cold start. I believe the compression on these was 100 to 110. I'd just go with getting the head done, and if you end up wanting to resleeve later, the head will already be done.
