Having never seen one in use I was wondering if this gave a form of live PTO like the chalmers hand clutch did. Did this replace the foot operated one all together or was it used in addition to it. Thanks

The M & W hand clutch controlled the drive wheels,(by braking action inside the rear end)it did not effect pulley, PTO or gear selection all of which required the normal use of the foot clutch. My poor memory says it worked the same as a hand clutch on some Massey Harris tractors of the 50-60's. These hand clutches were a good tool but were in MHO NOT live PTO. My nickel Dick Davis

Yes the hand clutch did give you a form of live PTO. It stopped the movement of the tractor by letting the gear motion in the differential spin out the left hand pinion. This stops the tractor from moving forward but the transmission is still spinning, just the final drive stops. Kind of like when your stuck in the mud and one rear tire is doing all of the spinning. Same thing just the spinning is throught the lefthand pinion. It actually gives you everything live, but it won"t be something you want for loader work because you can"t shift with just the hand clutch. It works really well with a baler or combine or mowing machine. I have one on a "M" and a Super H.
