Must be the good Lord doesn't want me to bale hay this year. Firt ten acres is rotting nice and evenly. Second ten is raked and looks beautiful. Went to town to fill up the tractor and came down a hill a little to fast, pulled the TA on to drop it down and made an awful whine then went boom!. Something came through the little D shaped cover over the TA. (just a small hole) What did I do? These lessons are sure getting expensive. Gary

Pull the cover off and look at the TA flywheel. My guess is the flywheel and pressure plate blew up. Will the tractor move?

Yes, it moves, seems to be stuck in low range. Its leaking tranny fluid in a steady small stream. I put a couple gallons of fluid in it and moved it a mile before it ran out of fluid. Thanks

TA BOOM! BORROW OR HIRE ANOTHER TRACTOR TO GET YOUR BASIC WORK DONE. THEN INVENT A TIME MACHINE AND GO BACK BEFORE THE TA BOOM! .... USE YOUR REGULAR TRACTOR BRAKES AND SAVE THE TA FOR SLOW TORKY LOADS. BREAK DOWN THE ABUSED TRACTOR WHEN YOU GET SOME TIME AND CHECK WITH ALL OF YOUR INTERNET FRIENDS IF THE GOING GETS TOUGH ... THE TOUGH GET GOING.

GOOD LUCK.

Where is the oil coming from? You won't need a new TA all you will need is more than likely a TA flywheel and a TA pressure plate. Pull off the top cover and look in the center compartment and look at the damage. I have a good flywheel and pressure plate that I will sell. You can repace the flywheel and clutch with a clutch split.

Jim, I got it home, took the cover off and you were right. The overrunning clutch blew up. I can't see any damage to the TA yet. The hydralic pump doesn't seem to be working. If you would send me an email at topsaddle@first-comm.net with the particulars on your clutch parts, I would appreciate it. Thanks

I read about a shaft to eliminate the TA. "replacer" are these a good idea?

Not a bad idea, but you will find that there is a lot more to it than just buying the shaft. There are a lot of other things that have to change as well. (According to the IT manual that I have) Also you will still have to split the tractor 3 ways to Sunday just to get the T/A out. Once you get that far, you might as well spend the few extra dollars to put the T/A back in. They are very useful for just about anything. Well, except slowing down. (just kidding) :)

Gary,

I wouldn't do that....you would then have 'half a tractor'.

Gary,

Sorry to hear about your misfortune with the darned T/A. That really had to have been a gut ripper.

I've used those old T/As for what seems like a million years to slow down with. 'Course out here, the land lays like a tabletop and there are no hills to compound the troubles.

Hope you get it repaired and back to the field soon.

Allan

Gary: If I did something like that, I would never tell it on YT discussions. There have been enough lectures on here re that subject to publish a book. To be a regular on here and then go out and do something that; what can I say, "unbelieveable."

Gary: I am not intending my post as kicking you. My first experience with TA happened in 1955, when my dad bought a new Farmall 300. In the years that followed our farm probably logged 75,000 hours on 5 TA equiped tractors, and we only ever had one that failed. It was the 300.

In the years since 1955 I have listened to hundreds of people criticize TA. If I count the griping I've heard here at YT the numbers are in the thousands. My question is, when are people ever going read manuals and learn how to maintain and operate a TA. You are certainly not alone, by your experience, hundreds have done the same. Then they have the nerve to criticize TA, when indeed the problem is people. I will give you credit on that one, you didn't criticize TA. You can look through the archives here at YT, there has been countless posts on the do's and don'ts with TA. Obviously few people read them, as is the case with the manual.

No Gary, my mission was not to kick you but rather, jolt you and others into reading up on TA. I may seem a bit abrupt, however it has been my experience two items intice people to learn more. Those are hit him in the pocket book which is going to happen to you, and the other making it a double wammy, "being abrupt".

I do hope I have been of some help, and believe me I do know a bit about the school of hard knocks, great way to learn, but expensive.

Hugh, I'm a regular on here because you guys are such a wealth of information. I wish i could claim experience back to 55 but I have been working on tractors and trying to learn the cattle ranching game a grand total of two years. I worked on a dairy farm as a kid but most of my life I worked as a saddle maker and Deputy Sheriff. (retired) I did get a operators manual on ebay for the tractor. It says that it should be forward for engine braking but sure doesn;t mention self destruction, I sure could have looked up past posts but I didn't realize it was a problem till I done it. Another lesson learned Thanks again for all your help.

Looks like you already got the good news about a TA not being a brake.
Now to the fun part... Fixin it.
You wont be happy if you take it to a dealer. TA repair is a 3 way split and the labors gona rock your world + dealer price on a rebuilt TA is in the $1000 range just for the parts.
Go that route if your time is worth more than your money.
If you have some time and want to save some bucks. Or like me have no money or time.
You can fix it your self for about $600 give or take on some of the tools and fluids.

Steel wheel ranch has rebuilt TA"s for $395 + core. Your core is not worth much but try any way, add $100 core charge if they wont take it.
Get the TA seal kit they sell, has all the seals and gaskets you need for I think $60.
There is a link to them on my web site.

If you want to see how to replace a TA check out my Web site I documented one on my Farmall 400. Simular enough so that you can get a Idea whats involved.
Good Luck.

Hmmmmm. I fixed it. looks like my ISP and I need to have a go around again.
He pulls this crap about every 4 mos or so.
I negotiated free webspace with 75 megs of space and unlimited traffic as a condition of my service. My site gets 100 times the traffic as any on his servers. Every now and then there is a problem on his free server that causes me to loose data.
This promps a phone call from me to him to fix it. He then gives me some sales pitch about moving to a pro server because of my traffic.
Getting sick of it. DSL is coming this fall and he is going to be a$$ out.

Yep, you blew it up. Mechanical TAs only hold the tractor back in Direct. Pull the TA going downhill, and the whole works starts spinning at light speed, until it disintegrates. :(

Yeh, your boom was also your boo-boo. The mechanical TA CAN NOT be used for engine braking ie.) slowing down. It will... well, you found out what it will do. The hydraulically operated TA's fixed this problem. I'd hate to break it to you, this is going to be expensive. I don't know how extensive TA work is, as I have not had to deal with one, but I would definately seek a dealer's advice to how much work would have to be done if you did it alone or how much it will cost for them to have it done. Pulling that TA for slowing down is a big no-no on those tractors. Good luck on fixing it, and honestly, my heart goes out to you.

I know that and have never done it, either. I have been raised that it can be kept in low down hill, but not to shift it to low downhill. Thanks for the info. I actually want to look it up for the heck of it now, but I really have no doubt that it is in there.
