I was reading on another board ( Please forgive me) that JD's like GL1 gear oil and have a problem with GL5. I was wondering, would a Farmall H also have this problem? I was planning on using IH 85-140 GL5 in my H and 154 final drives. Thanks!!

They don't make a GL1 anymore, as far as I know. From the research I've done, they made GL2 as a replacement for GL-1. Contrary to belief, you cannot always just replace one GL grade with a 'higher' grade. This is particularly true of many GL4 applications - I would *not* try to replace GL4 with GL5, especially in a modern manual transmission where they specify GL4. GL5 may have superior properties, but it is different.

In the case of your tractor, I would recommend that you use GL2 or GL2-GL4. The GL2-GL4 is supposed to meet the specifications of all gear oils in the GL2 through GL4 classifications.

i bought a 5 gal. bucket of GL-1 at the local CarQuest auto parts store about two months ago. they said they usually keep a bucket in stock, so they must still make it somewhere.

GL-5 is a newer product, with stronger additives to better protect gears under very high loads.

The only downside (that I know of) is that the additives are reputed to attack brass parts (thrust washers and such) over a long period of time. I read recently that one of the oil companies states that their current "improved" GL-5 oil will not harm brass parts, but I can't remember which brand that was.

So, to answer your question, if there are some brass thrust washers in the transmission or rear end of the tractor, the may be SOME risk, over a LONG period of time, of using GL-5.

You are right-on in what you say about GL5 and brass. I switched the oil in the transmission of my 2000 Nissan from GL4 to GL2-GL5. Within two days, the syncros did not 'grab' properly. Gear grinding was obvious unless I shifted very slowly. Changing to GL2-GL4 cured the problem, but it took many weeks for the problem to completely go away. My mechaninc pointed out to me that GL5 can be a culprit - especially in Japanese vehicles. It seems they use lots of brass in their syncros.
