We have an old model M, circa 1951, that doesn't see much in line of farm work anymore and gets used maybe 10hrs/yr if any. I'd like to restore it or, at the least, get it running as well as can. I thought I'd change the cooling fluid and discovered that it hadn't been changed in almost 20yrs. The fluid's appearance viewed at the neck of the radiator looks good - almost new - but the drain was completely plugged with a blueish/black gritty grease-like substance. After I poked through this mess my fluid started to drain and it looked pretty good. What was this substance in the drain plug and is it likely that it's inside the engine? The engine does run - quite well, actually - but could use a good tune up and some seals replaced. How can I clean the inside of the engine of any dirt/sludge, etc. that may have resulted from many years of neglecting any fluid changes? Also, if I need to remove the radiator for special servicing do I need to remove the steering 'column'?

You remove the steering shaft, not the column.
Take out the large cast nut in front of the shaft & disconnect the shaft at the universal joint. Clean the shaft and smooth the joint end so it will not cut the seal on the way out. It's full length has to pass through the seal & bushing on its way out the front. Good idea to replace the seal when the shaft is out.

Kevin about every radiator I have drained on an H or M would have a plugged pipe. I usually unscrew the pipe then clean it out. I wouldn't worry about it. Yes you would have to remove the steering column because it goes through a hole in the upper radiator pan to the upper bolster.

Are you saying that although the radiator drain pipe was plugged I needn"t be too concerned about what might be inside the engine?
What is the substance plugging the drain anyway? Is it something from the coolant which aged over the years?
