I have a Farmall Super A and want to put a angle pto on it to drive a belly mower. Is the pto for the "A" the same as Super A or 140? I have seen some on ebay for the "A", but didn"t want to get the wrong parts. My tractor has the pto straight out the rear and only a cover plate where the right angle gearbox should be.

The A PTO changed at 66671. After that, it will interchange with the Super A. The earlier unit can be used if you take the entire PTO unit (except the shifting sleeve, which is different from A to Super A). Without checking some part numbers, I am not sure if some of the later 2xx series will completely interchange (may be some gear ratio differences).

When you get the pulley attachment off of a junk tractor, don't just pull the 4 bolts and take what comes with it. You have to get the bevel gear (and probably some hardware parts) off of the upper PTO shaft. It would be easier to get the whole PTO if you can get it for a good price.

Nick: Don't overlook a belt pulley gear box from a C, SC, 200, 230 or 240, they are the same.

Nick: On the right angle gear box or as most refer to as the belt pulley attachment, I think all are the same except some of the very early Farmall A, and I'm not sure even that affects the gear box for pulley. If you buy one make sure you get the drive gear that goes on tractor shaft behind that cover. Also there are shimms for lining up the bevel gears. Make sure you have those.

I'm guessing you want a pulley on that right angle drive off the pto. Thats what most belly mowers use that I've seen. FYI, that right angle drive pulley turns slower than the pto shaft so if you adapt a pulley on the pto out the rear, you belly mower may get crazy with speed. I couldn't say for sure but I think I've heard that all the pto parts are the same. If no one chimes in, you might do an archive search on the subject. I think it's been discussed before. I would think a salvage yard would know for sure.

Kendall: The belt pulley shaft turns just a shade more than 1000 rpm when pto is at 540.

The owners manual gives the pulley as 1157 rpm.

Oops! my bad. I knew the ratios were just about what you describe but I guess my brain was in the wrong gear when my fingers did the typing. The belt pully does turn faster than the pto.

Kendall: I scratched my head a few times while reading your post and said, " That guy knows better than that." You see, I do read what you have to say. Keep up the good work.

Nick, You don"t say if you have a pulley in addition to your PTO. I know some came with PTO only. If, however, you do have a pulley, the pulley itself will come off the splined shaft, and you can use that to drive your mower. If not, I"m sure you can also use the existing PTO and adapt accordingly.

Paul: the reason most people use the belt pulley on offset Farmalls is to get enough speed on the belly mower. You can drive from existing PTO shaft, but you need a pulley large enough that you must cut end off fender or remove it. My mower, a Woods 59 has a 10" V pulley even for the belt pulley gear box. I don't remember the exact figures but I believe belt pulley shaft speed is slightly over 1000 rpm when pto is at 540 rpm.

hugh, I thought about including the difference in rPM"s in Pto and pulley speeds, but without knowing exactly what the whole situation was, decided not to roil the murk of the subject. Due to the speed difference, I have seen a 2 stage system utililizing the PTO, and going from a 10" to a 5"x10" increase, which in effect brings the secondary drive pulley back to 1,000 RPM"s. There"s always a way, but without a doubt, running off the pulley rather than the PTO, simplifies things.

Paul: Having used my mower all summer now, I think the belt pulley route is the best way to go. The V pulley on the belt shaft is directly centered with mower. I have enough speed on mower that I can mow at half throttle in 1st gear. I like that as I have a couple of rough areas I mow, nice to be able to slow down. Also nice to take it a bit easy around big trees and their roots. If one ever got into the bulldozing mode, I think a Super A does have enough traction to do a lot of damage to the mower.

Another item I notice is these new Zero turn or front mount mowers have great manuverability, but they don't measure up to a Woods on mowing quality. I never see trails of clippings even mowing grass 4 to 6 inches high. The day after I've mowed you can't tell which way I travelled during mowing. I have neighbors around here with ten times as much invested in lawn mowing equipment as I have. I don't see a system I'd rather have.
