Just did my brother's SM. We resorted to heating it with a torch aided by a gear puller. No damage done--just had to redo the paint is all.

Hey Wes...

I went thru the same thing on my 300U. It just took WD-40, letting it sit for a bit, and then a solid gear puller.

Ya I just got done doing that with a 6 ton gear puller and about a half a can of penetrating oil. That baby won't budge. I'm afraid if I get my impact out I'll tear something up in the gear box.

Man, you gotta be kidding me. Afraid of wrecking something in the gearbox???

You aren't putting any force on the gearbox. The puller pulls against the steering wheel hub and pushes against the end of the steering shaft. It would work if the wheel and shaft were floating in outer space, completely detached from EVERYTHING.

Yeah, I suppose if you just go hammering away without holding the steering wheel, you could crack a gear... So get someone to hold the steering wheel while you crank away on it.

My son & I just took the steering wheel off a 1940 "H" that was original. Used a torch to heat and an air hammer with a flat end punch (1/2"diameter) to push it off. Polished the shaft after it cooled and the new wheel went right on. Be sure to rethread the end of the shaft so the nut is holding the wheel center, not just locking up on buggered threads. 3/4" fine thread size.
I made a new slim profile nut by grinding a thick one to size and rethreading it also.
