Ever notice the threat ads on this site?
Almost like they are holding a tractor for ransom.
" Give me $1500 for this tractor now or she's a goner!!"
" Scrap mans on his way. Come save this one for only $1200"
Just hit me sort of sad.

Kelly: I don't know why they bother, why not just do it.

I dont really have an opinion on it one way or the other.
Just made me wonder about it. Wanted to see what others think.

Kelly: I'm much like you, on the opinion of parting out tractors. I've done a bit of it mainly to get parts I needed. Problem I find is what do you do with all the unused inventory. I had some small value items hanging around my shop this spring, items I knew I'd never use. Put out what I thought was a reasonable add. Sold 1 item, a straight foreward deal which I do not regret. However if I count the time checking out most economical way of shipping other items that never sold in the end, I would have been money in loading it for the scrapyard.

I rather doubt there is a lot of money to be made in the small time tractor parts recycling business. Volume and large variety draws people.

Having said all of this, I rather doubt the threat approach is very effective. I know I wouldn't even bother to call them. Kind of hard trying to do business with a non business person.

When they say they are going to part it out, that is a good time to inquire about the parts that you may be looking for. Unless you are in the used parts business, after a few "Popular" parts are gone, you end up with a pile of scrap iron. Sure many of the remaining parts may be good but unless they are properly stored, they may be ruined or lost. Also, supose you need a part that isn"t a major part, the seller may not want to remove it until something major is sold first. I am not going to want to wait around. Also, probably the tractor is a piece of junk to begin with. I have seen many pieces of equipment over the years that have gotten a "5 gallon overhaul". To me , when somebody says a completely restored tractor, I assume factory new. Of course, when I look it over, the only part of the restoration that is correct for a perfect restoration is the joke of a price. I pick it apart and then offer a really low price LOL. So if they want to part it out, be first to ask for a price on parts that you may need.

i ran across one of them the other day(by mistake i might add) an old 560 with wide front, shifter gone for god knows how long both rear wheels rusted beyond recognition, engine locked up tight, tin that was there was very rusty and beat.and he says 1200 for it without the wide front i about sh*#t my pants.i was thinking 3-500 with the wide front and that was being very generous of me.as far as i'm concerned he can just die with it cuz he ain't never gonna sell it for that.

I always find it humorous that they want more than double of the scrap value...

I guess I am more easy going. Put whatever you want in the ad that will not make me open my wallet.

Yeah,

I wish they would come right out and say, "Yep, I'm really trying to peddle a piece of sh!t here."

At least, You would know you by that time that you were dealing with an honest fellow. :>)

Yes, I was wondering when someone would mention this, it seems more recently ads like these are common, even with implements.

I used to feel that I needed to "save" tractors. Then I found out that the sum of the parts on a tractor is usually about twice what it is worth, sometimes more. Now I buy them to part out and keep the parts I want for my own projects. I am not saying it is right or wrong, just a thought.

It is funny you mention that , but I just answered a guy on the tractor photo ads. He has a WD AC for $1500 or he will parts it. I ask him if he would take junk pricing for it , but so far he hasn't answered.

Almost sounds as though the tractor is stolen and they need to shed of it quick.
