Trying to get the old '51 model M winterized and and need to pull the radiator to get at the waterpump. Having a helluva time with removal. Loosened/removed all nuts 'n' bolts holding the radiator down, including the fan shroud. Problem is that the radiator needs to tip forward away from the engine but the massive "Y"-shaped column at the nose used for the steering is in the way. Does this massive Y-shaped block have to be removed to get the radiator off? Also, my drain pipe underneath protrudes out below. Does that have to be removed before pulling off the radiator? Do I have to cut or otherwise destroy the lower radiator hose?

The lower radiator bolts are 7/16 in fine thread It is very possible to tear these out the the lower tank bracket, I suggest to give them a goodshot of blaster prior to trying to remove them P.S. Your are lucky it is a late M as the early M's did not have a hole in the casting for a socket. Good luck

On antoher topic you might have already tackeled. I have a model m. put on a three point hitch planning to use a bush hog mower. It looks like I will need to lengthen the pto shaft to get the mower to hook up. The hydraulic pump takes up most of the pto shaft. What is the best way to get this extension on the pto shaft?

Remove the steering shaft out the front.
Cut the hoses; you should replace them anyhow.
With the two nuts & springs UNDER the radiator removed and the drain pipe &/or drain cap removed, the radiator should lift straight up.
A helper is very nice to have along on the job.

There are 2 nuts under the frame that hold the radiator in place. Have you removed them?

I took the shroud off then lifted up the radiator and shroud together (wife helped me. The drain pipe comes out with the radiator.

Take your time.. it will come out

I have removed the two nuts and springs from underneath the radiator. The radiator can rock from side to side now. I have not yet been able to remove/slide the lower radiator hose off the radiator. I will cut if need be but question the technique for eventual replacement. I have tried to lift up on the radiator but the fan hits the fan shroud which is/was bolted to the radiator. I have unbolted the fan shroud for more freedom of movement but am still not able to wiggle the radiator away from the engine.
Do I need to remove the massive front steering assembly in order to remove the radiator? Also, do I need to remove the radiator drain pipe?

You do not have to remove the front stearing post to get the radiator out.

Take the shroud off, remove the fan, and you can remove the water pump without taking off the radiator, with difficulty.
