I have a 6V system w/ a voltage regulator mounted on the generator (not using the light switch L-H as the regulator). Can anyone tell me what the ammeter should be reading when the tractor is running? The needle moves only slightly towards "charging". Is this normal? Or should it all the way over, 1/2 or a 1/4? Starting seems to be ok so the battery is getting charged i guess. Thanks for any input.

Use an analog voltmeter to verify that the regulator is maintaining the voltage at about 7.4 Volts, for proper charging of the battery.

The amps will start high, and fall as the battery charges, but after a couple of minutes after starting (with the engine revved a bit off of idle), the voltage should rise to about 7.4 Volts and stay there. Being able to get the charging voltage up to that level, and not rise much above is a more accurate measurement of charging system performance than an ammeter.

Hi Joe,

The more she is charging the higher it will read (usually right after you start it), then, as the battery fills, the needle should fall back and rest just to the right of the center "0".

Joe - Normally the ammeter will show 12 - 15 amps (1/2 to 3/4 scale) charge with the motor at full speed immediately after startup. Then as the battery nears full charge charge rate should drop to 3 - 4 amps or so (slight deflection to the right).

If the battery is nearly fully charged the charge rate drop off should happen after just a few minutes after startup. However if the battery is down it could require several hours of running before the charge tapers off.

Your low charge rate could be caused by an improperly adjusted 3rd brush in the generator. However if the battery seems to be starting the tractor OK it means it's already receiving an adequate charge at the reduced rate. You will probably be Ok just leaving it as it is.
