Super C valve guide seating depth

YTers,

Could anybody or everybody explain the significance of how deep to drive the valve guides into the head (shoulderless valve guides). The top end of the Super C I'm rebuilding is OK except that all of the valve guides are at varying heights - all too deep in the head. The I&T manual calls for 1" from the spring seating surface. Is there any reason I can't just drive them back out to the correct depth? What would be the negatives of leaving them where they are? The only thing I could see that it would hurt is impeding intake & exhaust gas flow with the guide too far down in the head.
Thanks,
Bill

How are the valve stems and guides for wear? If you move the guides, you will be changing the areas on the valve stems that are moving in the guides. May not be a big deal, or may be depending. If you choose to move them, press them. Pounding on them can have some very undesirable effects on the structural integrity of the guides and head.

My nickel’s worth.

How much too deep and how much difference between them. You might run into some problems attempting to move them. They should probably be pressed. If you hammer on them you can crack cast guides You may end up replacing.

They vary from 5/8" to 3/4" from top of the guide to spring seating surface on top of the head. I pinged on a clean one with a small hammer and aluminum punch; it moved pretty easily.
I think I'll get the head hot-tanked and then take another look.
Thanks,
Bill

i don't think your tractor would know the difference...you might sleep better though if you knew they all were correct height
