Took apart the carb on my new H. It was running terrible and had rust and water in the tank.
I took the carb apart to clean it, btw lacquer thinner seemed to work really well at cleaning the gunk off of the carb. Anyway when I removed the mixture screw the seat was stuck on the end of it, the packing was shot also. After reading several posts in the archives, I guess I need to get the Complete kit from CaseIH. How will I get the new seat to stay in place? Any other words of wisdom when rebuilding these carbs?
Also, do I dare mess with the metering jet? This tractor had D16 plugs in it. What should the gap be? The manual I have suggested 0.020-0.025 for D15 plugs. The only work this this will see is Hay Rides and mowing of 10 acres of pasture twice a year.
It"s also an X3 with about 85 PSI in each cylinder. Is that low?
Thanks

Probably not good that the seat pulled out that easily, the needle must have really been corroded to it. Before you but any kit make sure that it includes the seat. I haven't seen a kit yet that does. Just curious, I've never had a seat removed, is the seat the same on both ends? If so, maybe you could re-install it backwards and have the same result as putting a new one in. Can anyone tell me for sure where a kit can be purchased that includes EVERYTHING you need for a truly complete rebuild???

Yes, the seat is the same on both ends although on one end the hole is flared slighlty. Looked to me that soemone had really turned the screw hard to get them stuck together. I was able to knock it off, it was not corroded. I've gotten the seats in Ford carb kits, but I never had a clue as to how to remove the old ones.
Now I have one out, and don't know what to do!
Actually, I think I'll put a thin coat of solder on it to make it fit....

Are you saying the flare was caused by the needle being too tight or is the flare machined into it??
Instead of solder why don't you try a thin film of locktite on the OD being careful not to get any inside the seat that could occlude the passage. Let us know the end of this story.

Yes, I think the flare was caused by the needle.
Well, not the end of the story yet..... .
I took the mixture screw out only to find that I had somehow LOST the SEAT!!!! I"ve looked all over the floor, I wish I would keep a cleaner work area! CNH does not offer the Mixture screw, seat or the packing anymore!
If I can"t find this seat, I may be stuck with getting a different carb. Anybody have the bottom half of an H carb? Preferably with a good seat & packing!

Hi Jerry, I cant answer all your questions but #1 why do you have to spend $60.00 or more on a complete carb kit through IH. Why not buy it aftermarket. Like here on YT or Me. #2 Yes replace everything you get with the kit even the metering jet. I am not sure about the seat still on the main jet ? I Run D18Y or D21 champs in mine a little hotter I beleve than the 16. I think 25 Thousands is ok for plugs. That doesnt sound to bad for compression a little low but the main thing is being all the same or within a few pounds of each other. The only thing I would worry about is what is the oil pressure doing when you mow that 10 acres does it stay high? Or drop to nothing??? Just a Few Thought .JON

The oil pressure is realy good when it"s cold....
Haven"t had it running long enough to see what it does when it gets hot, I"ll definitley keep an eye on it. When I bought it, it started right up, ran a little rough but OK. When I loaded it on the trailer the problems started. Took it for a trip around the yard (in road gear) and that"s what really stirred up all the rust and water. Anyway, Cleaned and Tank and Carb, rebuilt the starter and now its running worse than before..... Does your Kit have the mixture screw & seat and screw packing?

I will check into it more it says contains all parts nessesary for major overhaul. I also have a carb in the garage and a new kit from CT I will check that one to and see if I can figure anything out. That tractor doesnt have a heavy float does it ? Thats gas in the float when you take it out to replace the needle shake it and listen for gas inside if there is junk it and buy a new one. JON
