Super-C Starting Problem

Our Super-C regularly fires once or twice when starting, just enough to disengage the starter, but it does not keep running. It has a hot spark at the new plugs and gets plenty of gas. Starting with or without the choke does not make any difference. Once we get it started it runs fine. The carb does leak gas when starting. Would appreciate any comments. Thanks much. Smokey

A vacuum check isn't a bad idea either, if you have a leaking manifold gasket it can cause teh same symptoms. Ask me how I know! 8-)

Fix gas leak. Check engine timing and make sure mechinal advance guts inside distributor are working ok.

TIming is 0 degrees TDC and advance occurs with the mechanical advance weights. If is stuck in an advanced condition, starting would be hard but would run ok after cranked.

Gas dripping out of the carb only while starting would be an indication that you are flooding it. Are the plugs wet right after you try to start and notice the gas leak?

Don't know the answer to that one but will check. I assume wet plugs prove that it is flooding . Is that correct?

Wet spark plugs: if they smell like gasoline, you have a flooded condition. If the plugs are wet with oil, there are more serious thngs to consider.
Take some carb cleaner or brake cleaner and dry the plugs or get new plugs.
With the switch in "off" position and plugs removed, crank the engine to get rid of excess fuel then squirt some motor oil in the cylinder.
Crank the engine again to restore lost compression. Reinstall the plugs & try again. Be sure the wires are attached in correct sequence and timing is set. Is the gasoline fresh?? Old gas will not allow the engine to start easily but will run (sort of) once it fires up. 1 month storage is about the limit for gasoline with today"s fuel. Buy small quantities & use it up soon.
