Super M Power Steering?

I bought my Super M about a month ago and by no means am I knowledgable about tractors. I was told it did not have power steering and so didn't think twice about it. Then last weekend I was mowing and the steering stopped working. I looked under the tin and could see that there was a sleeve connecting two parts of the steering rod and the bottom half of the steering rod was not turning. Seemed easy enough to replace the key or bolt that kept all that together. When I took off the tin I noticed what I am guessing is power steering. Can anyone verify that this is power steering (see picutres at URL)? And if so tell me where I can find out more about how it works so I can get it working. Thanks!

That’s a Charlynn PS unit. They work well and are pretty much bulletproof.

That “sleeve” on the output shaft is a slip joint coupling. It isolates the steering motor from axial movement the lower steering shaft and also permits a bit of misalignment between the output and lower steering shafts. There should be dual concentric roll pins securing the coupling to the motor and to the lowersteering shaft. And as Boydg suggests it’s a good idea to put a safety wire thru the roll pin to keep it in place. (I’ve had the roll pin work it’s way out of the coupling with the resulting sudden loss of steering.). Also there should be a "boot" (a piece of flex hose packed with grease) installed over the slip joint to keep it lubricated.

Punch below for a scanned copy of the original Charlynn installation instructions for the Super M. Details of the slip joint coupling are on page 3 of the instructions.

You have a Charlyn power steering on your M. The sleeve does not look familar to me, but there should be a roll pin and not a bolt in the shaft. They can be purchased at any good hardware store. When you put the pin in it is a good idea to wire it in. Best not to use a bolt. For safty sake you can also put a smaller roll pin in side the larger one. Hope this helps. Boyd
