I need some help figuring out why My 1940 H is missing under load. I put on a remanufacted head and ignition parts are new. purrs at an idle both low and high, but in gear it misses. I am getting some oil coming from the exhaust manifolds, could be a ring problem or seats???
I have retimed the valves but nothing seems to really help. Anyone have answers???? Appreciate the help from all!!

Thanks for all the input from everyone I really appreciate the info. I have not done a compression ck since I replaced the head. What is a normal cylinder pressure I should be close too?? B4 I replaced the head # 1&2 cyl were 45lbs
#3 28 and #4- 0lbs but thats where the crack was in the head. I put a new gasket on and torq to manual 70lbs. I probably should have replaced the rings but that"s a little beyond my knowledge. Hopefully one of these will cure it.

Yes! If you have done the ignition check you have clean fuel.
Does it miss on the same cylinder all the time or on all cylinders. Run it for ahile and pull the plugs to see which one is fouling.

That oil leak at the manifold sounds awefully suspicious Is the gasket good. Check the torque down pressure on the bolts.
Its my guess a compression check should show up a problem.

You may have a fuel mixture problem after the work you did to the engine. Be sure the carburetor isn"t your problem.
With the engine warm & running at wide open throttle (WOT), turn high speed mixture screw in until the engine begins to starve for fuel. Then turn the screw out until it begins to blubber. Now find the "sweet spot" in between the two settings. If you are working the engine (plowing, etc.), then the high speed screw needs to be turned out 1 turn or more beyond the "sweet spot" to be sure the engine isn"t starving for fuel and can develop its rated power.
The same procedure can be followed for idle mixture with the addition of the ldle stop screw to set the low speed RPM.
On the "H" carb, the idle mixture screw is an air adjusting screw so turning in will richen the mixture and out will lean the mixture.
Aren"t carbs fun!!

Yes I agree start with the small things first Try some new champs D21s , Valve adjust,Carb setting, Water in gas? Points, condenser, rotor,Cap , Isit a Mag?? Then go to the motor if none of them work. JON

Your problem could be a number of things. The way you have described it under load it seems either the is insufficent compression or an ignition problem. However there may also be a governor problem. Does the engine surge, miss and the pick up or just miss? I would start with resetting your ignition timing, then checking your compression. then go from there.

Main fuel jet may be just a little lean. Turn it out at high idle until you just see black smoke, then back in 1/4 turn or so.
