Hi, we just traded a 38" planter for a 30". Sometime this winter I'll have to narrow up one of the tractors, either the 856 or the 966 haven't decided yet. Those front ends haven't been touched ever, and I'm guessing they will be a pain. Any tips on getting the axles to slide into the center tube? Any tricks to get the tie-rods slid in? Is the 56 series front end any easier to adjust than the 66.

Jim, While I haven"t used it, and still havent resolved my own front end issue on my "A", I had more than a couple of people tell me that while heating the outer tube, to get some Bee"s Wax and apply it in all the seams, holes, and any other place that it has a chance to enter between the outer and inner tube. Bee"s wax will thin down and run laterally betyter than blaster and other penetrating oils, and holds up to the heat. As I said, I have zero experience with it, but have had numerous folks suggest it, one who was an old timer with Farmalls and the WFE adjustment adventures. It can"t hurt, especially if used with Hugh"s and Allan"s suggestions.

Jim: Don't rule out the fact you may need heat. I removed the front end from a tractor once, we had the center tube red hot before it let go. Several bystander, advisors suggested we destroyed the center tube and it would never stand up. That was 14 years ago and tractor has had mid mount cultivators in summer and a snow blade in winter, and still going. By the way I did tell my advisors, it was that or go for another center tube anyhow.

When you get it apart, as Allan said clean it up, and spray paint all contact surfaces with graphite. With graphite, in 25 years they will slide like a glove. Been there and done that.

I am with Hugh on this one. We have adjusted many wide fronts, and, if I can remember right, they all required heat the first time. For me, the tie rods were always the worst part. For those, I would get a couple of pipe wrenches, a torch, and a couple of helpers. Just make sure when you turn the outer part of the tie rods you don't bend the end. Never tried the graphite, but everthing that has graphite on it around here never gets stuck again.

Hi Jim,

Those front ends are a stinker even if you move 'em all the time and I don't think it matters which tractor you tackle; they are all nasty.

What I used to do, is to first loosen the cinch bolts, soak 'em down good with penetrating oil for a couple of days; maybe even a week if you have the time.

Then, the key is to get them to move "out" first. I'd lay a handyman jack on it's side and jack that big tube out against itself. (hope that makes sense). And then use a little hydraulic jack and some blocking on those tie rods in the same manner.

Also, take a big bar and get the thing to rotate. After you get it to move any at all, the fight is just about won.

Pull each side clear outta the front end, clean the tube and tie rods up, oil 'em a little and then they will just "fall" back in there.

Good luck,

Allan

Allan, sounds good. Would you consider coming to my house and freeing up a couple WFE for me? I'd pay well but not by the hour! LOL Dick Davis

Dick: He did make it sound rather easy and simple. I wish he could have been around the time, a friend and I got so nervous, that we may burn the shop down, we go his son to set up a fire pump at the pond. And yes he did hose the building down. If I ever tackle that again it will be outside.
