Will a 1950 M with Firecrater pistons and a super M bore Pull a 4 16 plow, at a reasonable depth? Or should I fire up the 1030.

It is a stretch of the imagination to think an M could handle a set of 4 X 16 plows. I would think 3 X 16's would be about it.

I plowed with 4-14's with a Super M-TA....2nd gear High side of the T/A. Field was rolling clay hills, old corn ground, 6-7" deep. M-TA was Same displacement but lower compression & HP than a '50 M with Firecraters or M&W's.... Following year with a good running stock 450 gas I was in 3rd gear.... So not impossible, or even uncommon... But I agree, 3-16's in 3rd and maybe even 4th gear is better use of the HP & weight of an M. I spent a few days pulling 3-14's with Dad's '51 M&W equipped M.... In 4th it would walk away & hide from the Super M-TA I mentioned above pulling the same 3-14's in 3rd gear. As with most things Your local conditions & mileage may vary.....

Depends on what kind of soil you have and how many hills you have. You may also want to put more weights on too. I know of people who pulled 4 bottoms with MD's so I am sure it can be done. I farm in NY state on rolling land with gravely soil and pull a 3-16 Oliver with a Super M or a Super W-6. It also makes a difference what brand of plow that you use. I know that my 3-16 Oliver pulls much easier than the JD 3-14 that I used before. Have heard that IH plows pull easier than JD, also.

Yup, JD plows have always pulled hard for me. Case plows did too..... ..... Olivers and IH's have to be the easier pulling plows of the lot.

Ran 4-14's on a 400..... ...Don't know what was in it but that SOB was a pulling machine! In our clay you ran 2nd..... .In the bottoms I coulda probably ran 3rd. I had power to spare in the high side of second. Darn thing would out run our 706D with a D282 pulling a disk/cultipacker. Only problem was it REALLY, REALLY, REALLY liked the gas!

I have heard the same thing about certian brands of plow pulling easier. Why is that? Is it because of the mold boards or the shears? Isn't the basic design the same? Sorry to hop on your question with one of my own.

We pulled 3-14,s with a Super M and later went to a 4-16 semi mount fast hitch mounted up to a 706 ger. Had loaded tires. No problem pulling these plows.
