Super C running bad

My Super C was running great, and then, all of a sudden, it started to miss and sputter. it's getting fuel. I did a quick check of the ignition system and it seems to be ok. Tonight I'll go over that more systematically. But this problem developed shortly after I checked the radiator and filled it up with coolant. It took almost 2 qts. After that I had it running at about half throtle, for about a half hour. Then, when I opened her up to full throttle, the problem occured and now it's constant. So here's my question. Could the head bolts be so loose that coolant is getting into the combustion chamber and causing the sputtering?
Dad and I did replace the head gasket about two years ago, and it's been seeping down along the block for quite a while since. I do notice some whiteish mist coming from the muffler just when I advance the throttle to full open but I don't know whether that's coolant or unburned fuel. I am gonna check the head bolt torque anyway but I was just wondering whether the experts thought that might be it.

How long does it take to use two quarts of water ?

Before I tore into it too far, I'd try a new set of points and adjust the timing.

Hi John, I would do what Red Dave mentioned on retorquing the head bolts to see if that solves your mist problem.

If it continues I would pull the head and have it milled for flatness and have it magnafluxed for any possible cracks. Always retorque the head after you have run the engine long enough to heat it up. Recheck your valve clearances too. Good Luck, Hal

Did you re-torque the head after running it for a little while after you replaced the head Gasket?

If it's seeping coolant, you may need to pull the head off again and have it checked for flatness by a machine shop. Could also be a crack in the head too, another thing a machine shop can check for you.

Some gaskets require sealant and re-torque, the last few I've done were Fel-Pro's and had "sealer and re-torque required" stamped right on the gasket.

On the poor running problem, I'd try new plugs first. Seems like they will foul pretty quick when these tractors are run at light loads.

White smoke indicates water in the combustion chamber. It looks like you need a new head gasket. Be sure to retorque after it's been run awhile.
