I have just purchased a 51 M & live in Wyoming where the weather can get cold at times. Year around temperatures range from -15 to +90 degrees. I was just wondering on what kind of oil to use in transmission & crankcase and to get some input. Can I get by with just one weight year-around?

Hey, here in Wisconsin is the same deal, I know I was outside at least one day last winter (had a house fire call, had no choice but to be outside) when the air was -18 degrees F. Anyway, I run a heavy duty Cenex 10W-30 Diesel engine oil in my Super M crankcase. Standard 80W-90 in the transmission will be fine. Things aren't moving fast enough to need a super duper fluid oil. Leaves a nice coat on everything. That's all you need. Good luck.

We see about the same temp range here in western NY - which incidentally Wyoming NY sits smack in the middle of...

Anyway in the crankcase I've run 15W40 year round in my Farmalls for many years. If yours has high compression pistons and has stock 6 volt electrics you might switch to 5W30 in winter to ease starting - but it probably isn't necessary.

I have 80W-90 in the transmissions - it works fine throughout the temperature range here.

Yeah Ben - both the live and countershaft driven hydraulic systems are independent of the tranny/final drives on the lettered Farmalls. I use plain old 10W hydraulic oil (purchased at Sam's Club, Autozone or wherever it is cheapest) in mine...
