Farmall H rim and tire size

Is a 15.5 X 38 tire too big for standard Farmall H Rims? My H needs a new set of tires, (the old 13.6 X 38's are shot)and I have a decent set of 15.5 X 38 in the shed from my 880. Does anybody have experience with this combination of tire and rim? Am I asking for trouble? I use this tractor for digging the garden and keeping the driveway maintained only, so no heavy work will be done. Thanks for any replies!

RV,

Not to stray from your subject line, but do you think that those old tires were the originals?

The reason I ask is because my dad bought a brand new H in '52. That tractor had 13.6s on it, I am just sure of it.

People have told me that I am crazy and just can't remember right. This little H I have now has the 11.2s and it just does not look right to me.

Allan

The most recent H I bought has 13.6's on er, and it really makes the tractor look better than my other one with 11.2's. Mine are mismatched however...but was wondering what the original brand might have been? This tractor is a three owner and I know the original owner. He swears that the left rear is original. Maybe?

Allan, While most Hs came on those 11.2s, I really don't think there was such a thing as a "standard" tire size, so it is entirely possible that your dad's H did arrive on 13.6s. My 1940 H is currently on 13.6s, and I really don't think it looks right. It's all in what we got used to looking at, I guess.

Rusty,

I'd just about bet everything that I own that the 11.2 tires I've got were originally intended for use on a center pivot.

It'll be interesting to see how long they last and how tough they really are.

Allan, I'd bet you are right, I have seen vendors at swap meets selling those tires, they were clearly marked "irrigation" on the side of the tires. The price was very attractive, but like you, I don't know how long they would last on an actual working tractor.

Mornin' Rusty,

Hmmmmm, well, these don't say "irrigation" on the side, but they just strike me as being a low-budget tire even though they are only a couple of years old.

I have the 15.5's on my H rims, they work OK but sure don't look right. I won't make that mistake again.

In my opinion if you have 10 or 11" rims they are a little small for the job I have 15.5s on my SM with 12" rims and she sits a little high in the front but they work perfect. It can be done but I have heard of problems from a few posts a while back. JON

A 15.5 needs to be mounted on at least a 14 inch wide rim. I have seen them mounted on 12 inch wide rims and I guess it worked but I would not recommend it. Why don't you sell the 15.5s you have and that will help to pay for the correct size tire for the H.

I've got some 15.5's on narrow rims on an H. They look a little funny but not bad enough to change them. They were on the tractor when I bought it several years ago and have performed well so far.
