greetings
I have a super M with a leaking radiator, I am in the process of removing the radiator, my question is how do you remove the steering linkage, do you remove the top plate on the steering box, and also while I can get to it seems there was discussion about flipping the gear over to remove slop in the steering.. thanks in advance
jack ps, I am looking for NH baler knotter parts..

Allan’s correct about removing the front cap and “unscrewing” the shaft out of the steering box.

The pivot shaft worm gear cannot be flipped over - it’s on a tapered spline and only fits one way. However if it is a full gear it can be ROTATED 180 deg and reinstalled. On the other hand if it is a sector type (half moon shaped) gear you are outta luck – it can only be installed one way.

Note: If your steering is sloppy check also for wear on the pivot shaft bushings – especially the upper one. If you find ANY radial play in the upper bushing it should be replaced while you’ve got the front end apart!

JNE,

Pull that front plug in the steering box; the shaft will then "unscrew" itself forward. Be ready to catch the oil that will drain outta there too.

Oil? Aren't you being kind of optimistic here? Most of what I’ve seen “ooze” out resembles the stuff the highway department uses to seal the cracks in the asphalt roads around here. LOL (Just giving you a bad time, hopefully the tractor was well taken care of and is still almost full of oil.) :>)

Have a good one!

You got THAT right! The two I've repaired contained nothing more than air when I opened them up - the oil had leaked out probably back when gas was still 29 cents.

Tip: After reassembly pack the gearbox full with a good wheel bearing grease. It'll lube the gears as well as oil - and it won't leak out the bottom seal!!

Or good gun grease.

The next trick is to get the nuts off the bolts inside the lower casting. They are hard to reach and used to have castle nuts with cotter pins. Above the nut is a washer and spring. It's a tough place to get a torch so soak the threads for a week or so before you start trying to get the nuts off.

I've been working on my Radiator on my M. I have found if I use short wrenches (the little stubby ones) I can get to the crown nuts a lot easer. Also, spray the crown nuts with WD40 or somthing like that and let them soak; the task will be a little easer to muster.

All right, you guys.

This is just simply a result of my superior thinking and high-level intellectual behavior..... ????? ? :>)

Dis is da reason I paid wayyyyy y tooooo o much for this old H. She had been thoroughly restored (and I mean thoroughly) prior to my sending the check.

Opened up the box, clear full of 'new' oil, new gasket and new seals all the way around. "0" shake or slop in the front end.

Checkbook is still smarting a little tho. :>)

(And 'sides that, it's my story so let me tell it the way I want to!) LOL!

Allan
