I see a lot of adds for IH's with bad TA's. How much should I expect to pay someone to repair it or is a not so big a job I could do it myself? I would assume you would have to split the tractor, and although I've never done it I would be willing to give it a shot given the pictures I've seen of it being done

Thanks..... ..... ...

I* don't understand why you keep repairing those TA's. Just take them out. Then no more troubles. David

Al: Aces is right, do it right. Reading YT discussions I have to believe there is a lot of misuse of TAs and just as many more make shift mechanics. TA and it doesn't matter which type are good for somewhere between 10,000 to 15,000 hours, if properly used and maintained. Believe me, I farmed with 5 of them.

You're darned right.

That is a repuslive thought. Pulling a T/A out of a tractor, I mean.

These things were meant to work. Use 'em!!!

If the job is done wright the first time then they wil last as long as you keep things in adjustment and on the hdy. T/A's never use it as a brake to slow down. I have some that are over twenty years old still going strong .

Dick, you have to split the tractor twice in effect, and that is what makes it difficult. At least on the 06 series on, don't know about earlier. You split the tractor, then split again ahead of the tranny. If you have splitting stands, a half way mechanic, and have a good repair manual, it might be something to tackle. We plan on putting the next one in ourselves also. We also know the number to a good mobile repair service if we run into trouble, AKA plan B.

Dick,

This would kinda depend on what size of tractor we are talking about and yes the tractor has to be split at both seams.

On a bigger unit, you can very easily expect to see a $2500 repair bill from a reputable shop.

Please don't ask me how I know..... .. :>)

I can't tell you how much for someone else to do it, but I can tell you that if you are mechanically inclined, literate, and can follow detailed instructions then go get an IT shop manual for the model you are interested in. Read it over and see if it is something you think you can handle. Go from there.

I have done them myself and would again, but then again I grew up reparing tractors...

The TA makes the tractor. Engines have to be overhauled, clutches replaced and whatever. I would not have wanted to be without TA on my 706.
