i bought an H in june and brought it home and had it sitting outside while i was building a barn to put it in. got a new battery for it (6 volt system) and when i checked the oil, was full of water. drained it all,put new oil in it, cleaned the plugs but can not get it to turn over with the new battery.(battery is good. put it on the charger and was full power) did try turning it over with a 12 volt battery and it did turn over, so it's not siezed. should i try pull starting it? or any other suggestions? matt W

Re: H wont turn over. update in reply to matt w, 12-01-2004 08:22:12
here is an update. had to get a new starter button, broke the one that was on trying to get the connections off of it. had fried them a little using a 12 volt battery. put new starter button on, new connections on, cleaned off all the ends to make sure of a good connection. took off the plugs and put some WD-40 in it and let it sit. went out the next day and was able to get it to turn over. have been able to several times since, but it did not start. will a 6 volt system turn over slower than a 12 volt? because it does turn over slower than my other H. if so, than it may just not be getting gas to get a spark because it didn't even show signs of firing. was just turning over. any thoughts?

Yeah give it a pull and see what happens. It might start up and run good if not go to plan B. Watch oil pressure and if it comes up you are not going to hurt it by pulling it a reasonable distance. I would also check to make sure transmission has oil and is not full of water before pulling.

Pull the plugs and see if it turns over. It should turn over by hand very easily. Try rotating it by the fan if you don't have a crank. If it is still seizing it is definately your pistons. Since the problem seems to be age, I would be carefull putting a lot of pressure to it. The rings will crack easily. Use a thin oil treatment through the spark plug holes and let it sit.
If it has been seized for a long time you may find taking the head off the easiest way to service the valves. At least then you can do a complete job rather than a half assed one.

If it turns over with a 12 volt and not a 6 volt battery, you could have 12 volt battery cables on the old girl. The 12 volt cables will not carry enough current to the starter with a 6 volt battery. They are usually 4 gage wire. You need 2 gage for the six volt system. I use 1 gage on all my H's. Also since you had water in the crankcase. You've probably got rust. Good guality clean oil will help that. I use a quart of slick 50 in my H's when I change oil. You see I still use them for work and it keeps me from having to tear them down as much. The water had to come in the muffler and thru the open valve. So the rings at least on one piston will be stuck. (Always carry a tin can that you can drop over the muffler to keep this from happening) The shed is the best bet, if all the old farmall's had been shedded, none would be in junkyards now.
Enjoy

First, make sure the 6 Volt battery is good and fully charged. Just because it's new doesn't mean it's good, or fully charged. Half the brand new tractor batteries my Dad buys are junk when he gets 'em home, and no, it doesn't matter where he buys them.

Next, make sure you have good clean electrical connections, and battery cables that are heavy enough. You need at least 0 gauge cables, if not heavier. Previous owners tend to replace the cables with the cheapest pieces of junk they can find. Then the tractor refuses to turn over, and they blame it on being 6 Volt.

If the tractor turns over freely by hand, it could just be that the starter is shot...

Hi Matt, After you've checked what captaink has recommended and it still won't start put some fresh gasoline in it if you haven't done so. I would pull the plugs and run a compression check on each cylinder. The compression should be around 120 psi. Water may have got into those cylinders and the rings may be seized in the ring lans (grooves). You need good compression so a vacuum is created and fuel is pulled into the combustion chamber, then ignited when the plug fires. Squirt some engine oil into those cylinders too. If you good compression, spark and fuel it should run. Hal

With the switch off, grab the crank if you have it and turn it by hand. The amount of effort it takes to turn the engine should vary as each piston comes up on compression. If you don’t feel any change in effort, you can pull it all the way across the country and it won’t start. In this case pull the valve cover as you have stuck valves. Get some PB or some kind of penetrating oil on them. Get enough rope around that will fit in the spark plug holes and still leave a foot out side the engine. Crank the engine and the rope should push the valve closed. Oil it again and rotate the engine until the valve is free. Do this until all of the valves are working

If it does take more effort on each half-turn of the crank, and you can turn it over easy, pulling it won’t hurt, might not help either. I would suggest first pulling a spark plug wire and make sure you have spark that is blue and will jump about half an inch. If you do, then go ahead and pull away. If it doesn’t start, you can try squirting some gas down the air cleaner and pulling it again. Then if it starts and quits, you know that you have a fuel problem, probably plugged jets in the carburetor and you can deal with that accordingly.

Good luck!
