Looking at a farmall but the ta slips on the low side I'm a mech but have never worked on a ta before. Is this a high cost repair, and can it be done in my garage.
Thanks Hen

Low side TA would be the Ramp and roller.
Unlike Allan I buy the cheap ones $399 + core + $60 seal kit.
Steel Wheel Ranch has the rebuilts with Sprag type ramps. Has worked well for me.
I did my 400 last winter replaced the clutch, rear engine seal, TA clutch bearing, TA and rebuilt the trans. Got all that done for about $1200 total. I maybe should have replaced a couple trans bearing wile I was there, but ran out of money.
Its not hard to do just time consuming. If I can do it any one can.

I have a theory that TA's come three ways no matter what the tractor they go in.

one: New two: going out three: out

Just kidding really. We always bought our tractors out of the south and they did'nt have TA's in them. I did'nt have a TA on the farm till about ten years ago. that's when I found out the three ways you get TA's.I figure every time you move the handle it cost two dollars.

Just teasing

Happy holidays and Merry Christmas

I just completed one in a 400 and did one in a 460 last year. You need a good splitting stand and a chain hoist to do the job right since you have to first split at the clutch housing and then at the front of the transmission. May want to replace the rear engine seals as well while you are open and get all new gaskets for oil pan and all bottom covers. Many of these gaskets come with the new ta assembly. Go with the heavy replacement if you plan keeping the tractor a while. Cost 1500 -2000 Migraine

Hi Hen,

A good T/A will last a long, long time. There are good ones out there and there are cheapos.

Yes, you can do it in your garage. You'll have to split the tractor at two points to access the unit.

After figuring in all the bearings, clutches, pressure plates, machine work and of course that T/A, you will be spending on the order of $1500 minimum if you do the work yourself.

If you are going to work this tractor, I would really advise staying away from those little $495 dollar rebuilt units 'cause you'll be doing it all over again in a short while.

Just my view,

Allan

IH labor book says it takes 18 hrs to change one in a 560, dont know what tractor you have, but if you took your time, and safety,, you could, if it fits in the garage,,, LOL! ChadS
