No white Christmas here Its summer here! So Maybe you need to come to New Zealand and contract bale with our 40 year old New Holland hayliner behind a 674.

Dont tempt me.. If I could do what I wanted to do. It would be some where warm.
Snow birding would be a great gig if you could get it done. Be here when its avg 75 deg and be there when its avg 75 deg.

I can relate to that! I have a JD A that needs to have the radiator core replaced, a Farmall 656 that needs an engine rebuild, and a bunch of other things I would like to do outside that I can't do now because it's too doggone cold! BTW, I like your website. There's a lot of good info on tractor work there.

Maybe you need to get another tractor? How about a dozer, like a TD-9 or TD-6... Then you could push some dirt and work on your fields, driveway, or dig a new foundation for your shop? I haven't been able to find one yet, hopefully soon though.

I'm Bored Too.... in reply to Kelly C, 12-14-2004 12:26:06
Winter is here, and I should be pulling our old H in the shop for it's motor change after it threw a rod through the side of the block earlier this year. I actually thought of trying to stick an aluminum block 353 detroit diesel in it, but decided I wanted to keep the tractor original and I managed to get a good used block from a junk tractor for free, but right now as it sits it's practically a bare block with nothing but the cam installed and I'd have to transfer all the components from the failed block to the new doner block, but of course with new sleeves, pistons and rings installed and I think I will have to go with new rods too because the one that let go got kinda chewed up alittle and I'm unsure at this point if my crankshaft is any good in the failed block. I was kinda leaning toward trying a detroit conversion soon after the engine failed simply because I love the 2 cycle sound and thought it might be pretty cool to have something different, but then I decided I wasn't very interested in going around to shows, and I wanted a tractor to use that was going to be reliable, and the detroit turns at a higher RPM (2,300RPM, I think) than the original 1,750 max RPM gasoline engine, so that would mess up the gearing, and I don't want a tractor geared for racing for farm use and for the price of the detroit I could buy another H and forget about the one I have. I was also afraid I would end up with a tractor that would be unreliable due to the original H radiator not being big enough to sufficiently cool it and I'm not interested in hacking up the hood trying to stuff a bigger radiator in there, chances are it wouldn't work too well and I'd end up with an ugly looking piece of junk. Next I wonder just how many horses that stock H tranny and rear end could take, after all, the M is rated for just 10HP more and look at how much bigger the castings are, so if I was to stick an engine in it that created 90hp at the flywheel, would I have me something that would destroy itself if I ever decided to try and use that horsepower?.
Sorry for my winter ramblings, I'm not for sure why I typed all that other than I'm curious as to others opinions on it. I've basically already made up my mind at this point to put it back to stock form and, after all, it would be the safest and also the cheapest route to go to make sure I'd still have a good useable tractor in the end instead of dumping thousands of dollars in it only to produce a piece of junk that I couldn't even begin to get my money back out of.

Speaking of engine conversions for the IH H! Stick you an engine out of an 806 and have a usable tractor. Here is some info that mite interest you, IH made 3 bellhousing sizes that will interchange with each other. the H-460 is the same bellhousing bolt pattern, and same rear engine plate, and the same frame rail, bolt pattern. That means,, you can bolt a 221-301 IH 6 cyl engine right in the H bellhousing. Gas or Diesil u pick! Use the 460 frame rails, clutch, flywhell from the 460, use the clutch disk from a Super H, and the H pilot bearing, and it all slides together just like factory! now, heres the hard part,, you have to recut the flywheel, to use the H starter ring, its easy if you have a lathe. then you can use the stock H starter to start it! On the next size bellhousing,, you have the M-1456. Frame rails, and the engine plates are the same bolt pattern, so you can bolt a 407 into an M rear end, then you have the 400 series engine powered tractors,, which was like the 1066 and like size tractors which can be bolted into the M-1456 bellhousing. Pretty cool huh? Ive personally installed a 263 gas 6 in the H, and the 436 in an 856, and all IH parts were used,, no custom work except for the starter rings. Sure hope this might help you! ChadS

those sure do sound like some interesting combinations, but I bet I could buy a complete 806 for the price of just the engine and I'd much rather have the 806 (more gears and improvments over an H) if I was really looking for the horsepower. I was just looking into a 3cyl detroit conversion just for the sound. I would still be alittle worried how much horsepower could be run through that H tranny and rearend before disaster, an 806 engine would be 3 times the stock horsepower that the tractor was designed for. I wouldn't think bolting a 436ci from a 1466 into an M would be too good either, 140hp in a tractor that was designed for 40hp just doesn't seem like a good idea, thats 3 1/2 times the horsepower. I'm understanding that the 460 had problems with the rearends being too weak anyway, and using an even eariler rearend seems like really asking for problems. The 1466 has a wider nose than an M, so how would you accomplish proper cooling even if the engine did fit?. Your engine swap ideas sound great, but I still think I'm going to go stock. Thanks!

Jonboy. Thanks for looking! As far as what the H could handle for HP at a constant rate in the fields, well, that I cannot say, on a pulling track, thats a different story though,, I have an H that has a stroker kit in it, and it is a strong 70hp any day of the week. It would run in the fields all day long! Id say inthe fields,, the H could handle a 70 hp powerplant, but not overweighting the frame, to say,, match an 806. you would still only do, what an H can do, not what the 806 can do. but it sure was fun to do that conversion! I made sure the rear end was good, and replaced all the bearings in my 6 cyl conversion H, everything is AOK so far. Bout hthe only thing I can take away from this being a field tractor, is the radiator, and the wide front I had made for it. but, still can bolt onthe origianl 460-560 front end right on. the frame rails were wider across in the 400 series engine and frames. the frame rails still are the same bolt pattern to bolt either one on the bellhousing. just like the small block bellhousing for the 460,, the front bolster from the 560 which was a wider frame rail frame, still had parts available from other models, that could be used to make a swap. IH was like a huge rubix cube on what they did to progress and upgrade. technology,, really did not change that much as far as specifications were concerned in the bellhousing for the starters, clutches, etc. Anyways,, winter is here, got more conversions to figure out. Just a pile of parts, and a wish list. ChadS

Me, too. Yesterday I was able to go down to the swamp and dig out a ditch, uproot some privet.
Today it's too durn cold to play outside. It didn't get out the 40s all day. Good meteors last night, though. Again tonight, I think.

Kelly,

I'm usually the one NOT riding the tractor when it's time to pick up hay, and I don't miss the season one bit. I will say though, I do love riding my tractors in the sun and I get a lot less of that now that the sun goes down so early.

You boys needs some snow to push around, I took my little ford out today and blew some snow around, then I got my 'new' 300 out and scraped the laneway out somemore. Minu 10 deg. cel. (about 20 farenheit) today and about 8" of snow.

I'm not farming, but do enjoy the tractors for hauling trees out of the bush for firewood, building tracks for motorcycles and all sorts of other things.
