Hey, I've got another one. I see OBO a lot on something for sale. For all my years, I thought it meant one thing, then I heard someone not too long ago say it stood for something else. Opinions?

Thanks everyone, for confirming what I always thought it meant--'or best offer'-- Though I did like the 'musical wind instrument' thing though :)
Somebody wrote into one of those 'Ask the Mechanic' deals in the newspaper and asked what OBO stood for, in this case in a car ad in the classified section. The reply was 'offered by owner'. I guess as opposed to a dealer? I always wondered where this guy got that. dwm

I thought it was a wood wind musical instrument.

It stands for, just what you thought. I don't know where someone got the idea that it stood for what you heard.

OBO stands for Or Best Offer. This is my 2 cents worth.

And whenever I see one, I wonder "by when"? And whenever I make one I wonder "what happened to it"!

Yeah, it's a lie. It means or best offer, but by when is never specified, and if the best offer is not what the seller wants he does not sell. A little like an auction where you find out when you go to pay that your high bid was not accepted by the seller even though other bidders thought you bought at that price.

I've learned to ask "Is this an absolute auction" when they ask for questions at the start, after I was the high bidder on 147 acres of farm ground being sold by out of state heirs by their lawyer.
