Hi guys. I posted awhile ago wasn't sure if I had a starter or battery problem with a 6 volt positive ground on my Super C I got in the fall. Put a 12 volt battery in the tractor and it starts great in this cold weather so looks like battery problem like you guys suggested. Now to confuse me I read a post that you can put a 12 volt battery with a 6 volt generator. I did some tests and with my bad 6 volt battery I get 4 volts on the battery with tractor off and when I start tractor it is charging around 7.5 volts. I put the 12 volt battery in it read 12.5 volts. Started tractor it read 13.5 volts charging on my digimeater. Ok now would for some reason the voltage regulator sense the difference and allow more voltage to flow? Also think somebody hooked the voltage meater up backwards it always shows discharge but when turn lights on it goes closer to 0 instead of showing more discharge ( only did this with 6 volt battery don't want to blow my bulbs). Would this being hooked up backwards have something to do with it? I guess what I would want an opnion on is can I run a 12 volt battery or should I stick to a 6 volt battery? Anybody have any ideas as to why I get charging just over the amount that the battery in the tractor is? Has me confused but that don't take much.

First of all, the 4 volts on your 6 volt battery means that it is either bad (shorted cell) or completely discharged. When connected and running, the 7.5 volts from your generator at your battery is normal. Probably even a tad bit high. You would need to connect a good battery to know for sure. If you installed a good 6 volt battery, your generator should be able to keep it charged - perhaps even overcharge it a bit.

12.4 is the usual reading you would expect on a good fully-charged 12 volt battery. A generator needs to give a battery 13.8 to 14.0 volts - the precise voltage needed to ensure a complete charge depends on the temperature. 13.5 volts will not be enough to keep the 12 volt battery fully charged. If the battery is fully charged from the beginning, 13.5 volts would be enough to do a "float charge" on that battery. Unfortunately, as time goes on the 12 volt battery will lose more and more of it's charge, unless you bring it back up with a voltage in the 14 volt range.

As I mentioned in the post you mentioned, some 6 volt generators work with a 12 volt battery, some do not. You can probably use your present generator on a 12 volt battery, but you would need to put a battery charger on your battery and bring it up to snuff every week or two.

Hi, generators produce DC current and the voltage you read is the charge stored in your battery.
To charge a lead acid battery requires DC current flow through the battery to restore the chemical balance.
The voltage is a measure of the percent charge of the cells. The voltage regulator is adjusted to stop the generator from charging when the battery reaches a certain voltage level.

I hope this made sense.

First if you change a positive ground to a neg. groung without changing wiring on amp metter it willl read backwards. You can set your voltage reg to charge what you want up to the point that your generator will charge by bending the metal tab where one of the springs hook to inside of your volt. reg.. But to get a true reading you have to disconect battery. Only do this on a generator not a alternator .. There are 2 springs ond tabs inside of voltage reg and tabs will bend by hand so what I do is to watch metter at same time as I bend by pushing by hand one of the tabs if it works up or down thats the one to work with .. Engine running battery disconected... 6 volt battery charges at 7.2 volts 12 volt battery charges at 13.2 to 14 volts and 8 volt battery at 9.4 also if you have a mag you have to be careful because at 12 volts sometimes the mag impulse will kick out and you will have less spark than before....

The tractor is still a positive ground. It does not have a mag. I have tried running the tractor without the battery connected and it just quits. I know the older cars with an alt. will run without battery hooked up. I see there is a new fuse connector and amp guage in the tractor this is why I think somebody before me did some rewiring and got it wrong there. As soon a I get a half warm day I will trace the wiriring and see whats wrong and right. Now I have something else to wonder about.
1- Should a tractor be able to still run with a generator pos. ground no mag, and no battery cable hooked up after it is started?
2- Can a tractor run a 12 volt battery with a 6 volt gen.? it does seem to charge but I might be doing the testing wrong by sounds of it.
3- Why an I so confused? lol

I had problems starting my M with a six volt battery so I put an eight volt battery on it and did not change anything else.the lights work fine and the high and low charging works fine.Have done the same with a Super A with no problems. Both tractors still useing six volt generaters.
