Here"s the question guy"s, The rear end has froze, my guess, years of condensation mixed in the rear end lube. The last several days have been minus single digits in southern Michigan. I"ve had a heater underneath the old gal for 2 days, and have extracted about 20 gallons of stuff and crud. I have read the assembly requires 13 gallons of 90wt.

Any suggestions for flushing out the housing and what"s the thought on using lighter oil, about 50wt engine oil through the winter. I hate to waste about a 100 bucks worth of gear lube. Only if any thing else will do for now.

Thanks guys

The cowmans idea works well did that on my H you can reach in their and get all the creepin crude out then use a magnet and get all the fileings out laying in the bottom.

50 wt. engine oil and 90wt gear oil are the same viscosity. Strange huh? Had a semi once that called for 50 wt. engine oil in tranny, asked tech why, and he said that it was the same viscosity as 90 wt. gear oil but had additives that helped to keep the tranny cleaner. So I guess switching to 50 wt. engine oil would not be any help except to clean housing and then switch back to gear oil or Hy-Tran.

BWS,

I like to use diesel fuel.

If in the summer, I just put in about 10 gallons and run 'er around the yard for awhile. Then drain it out overnight so it is good and 'drip dried' before adding back the proper oil.

But in the winter time, after adding the diesel fuel, I like to jack up the rear end and block it up, put the tractor in road gear and let it set there runnin' in the wind with no load at "just off" idle for 10 or 15 minutes. This gives the diesel fuel a chance to "wash" the thing out.

Again, I'd let 'er drip for a spell to get as much diesel fuel out as possible before adding the new oil.

If your rear end doesn't have any leaks, just use Hy-Tran all year around.

Always worked for me,

Allan

You might want to pull the PTO unit and mop the case out with rags. Even after fushing with diesel i bet you find a lot of sludge. Once you get it fairly clean just add the 80-90 weight.

My experience is limited, but I think you'll have no problems with the regular oil once you have good oil in the tranny.

Now go have a Merry Christmas!

I flushed out the transmission case on my '52 M with diesel fuel. Drained 5 gallons from the case, add 5 gallons diesel, ran it around for 10 minutes, then drained it completely... I refilled with HyTrans oil. Pretty clean now.

When i purchased my 52 SM I drained the rearend and found the lube very creamy colored... Lots of water there. I did the diesel fuel wash and refilled with the recommended lube. Runs very well now... I also replaced the axle seals to help keep and water out...
