I have located a 53 Super M with factory propane. This tractor is in great shape. Can anyone tell me if this is a rare one. Thanks, jmh

I too have a 53 Super M LP. Just got it started for the first time in no telling how long. I'd be happy to hear about any other factory LP Super M and any suggestions as I improve/restore/repair mine. Thanks for all the good info.

jmh, What jonesy said is correct. Big John is off in his info. There were NO regular Ms made with factory LP. The first factory LPs came out on the Stage II Super M.
There are a good number that really like the LP tractors. Some of us prefer the LP over the gassers , I included. As CNKS said If the price is right I would buy it anyway. Have fun! Later,
John A

Guy Fay's Letter Series book says propane was available "from the start of Super M production".

Mornin CNKS, I know what it says, and I have read my copy of Guy's book, But I am here in the middle of LP country, and I haven seen a factoy set up on a Stage I yet! I have found Stage I SMs with what I belive to be aftermarket setups. I base this finding on the "known pics" of Stage II Super LP like the ones in Guy's book and the descripitions of the SM Stages in there too. From all outward appearence a Stage I SM, Looks like an regular ol M with disk breaks. Only caring a SM Badge.
So a factory SM stage I with factory LP, Should look like a regular ol M with a Stage II LP setup . Also there would be NO Live hydrolics, the Batt ery would be under the LP tank!!! Which there is not. So in turn reread the Stages of a SM in Guy's Book and you see how I have come to this conclusion. I still say , I am not disputing Guy's word here Just useing the info at hand and drawing a conclusion from it. So for a factory set up to have come from the factory on a Stage I SM, It would have to look like a aftermarket conversion. So the battery would still be under the LP tank, and not under the seat! Now this is my findings on this subject.
Happy New Year
Later,
John A.

I know the differences between a Stage 1 and 2. Just going by what Guy says, as he is almost never wrong. Could be a typo, as he has a few of those. I have not seen a factory SM in person, so I'm not going to argue.

CNKS, I agree, But it makes good discussion. I have a Stage II SM LP spoken for, As soon as this older neighbor of mine is ready to let go of it..
Later,
John A.

There are a few around. That was the first model they put LPG from the factory. It should have a cross mount tank rather than the front to back style that the retrofits were. They accually made a SMTA LP but contracted all those out to a company in Lubbuck TX. I would get it because the internal motor parts have FAR LESS carbon and wear on them.

It is my understanding that there were NO factory LPG letter series Farmall tractors. All of the Propane units were field conversions. The first factory LPG tractor was a 300.

Nope. It was the Super M. See Guy Fay's data book, bottom of page 107, and Guy Fay's Letter Series book page 104.

There were probably a lot fewer LPG SM's than gasoline models, but I don't think they would be considered rare. Probably sold more in the southern states, as I have heard that is where most of the converted M's were. If you like it and can get it for a reasonable price, buy it.
