I have heard some debate concerning replacing wide older seals with two newer thinner ones . Seems that many applicatins on IHC tractors had the wide ones. now we can only get the thin ones. Any comments?

Several companies make a seal and wear sleeve to cover the groove. I worked at IH dealer and used them on the 74 and 84 series rear cranks. The 66 sereis has the sleeve made in the seal. hope this helps.

I agree with Bob M. The newer seals are higher quality, particularly if the old ones were leather. I will on occasion double the seals If there is room, but as stated the outer one will be dry. Grease might help, but grease won't last forever, then there will just be second groove to work around.

As BobM said, use a thinner one and position it in a different place if there is a groove. Using a double will just result in the outer one wearing the lip off from running dry.

Where 2 seals are used, with the lips facing the oposite ways, fill the space between the lips with wheel, bearing grease.

Accually SOME of the wider ones are still available, just maybe not through IH dealer. When rebuilding my working M,I needed a couple here and there.I dont recall the brand however but the one for the upper tranny shaft was available like that at my local parts house, but was twice as much as the two singles,so I put in the two single.

Was the brand CR (Chicago Rawhide) by any chance?

Possible. My parts guy usually has to order them for me,occasionally has then in stock.he usually goes by what I have first then goes from there/if he has to order it I have it the next day.If Itry to get it from my dealer it takes a few days.I stopped using my dealer last year due to poor service and smarta$$ attitudes. Its a shmae really, they use to be a really great dealer!

I have replaced the old style (wide) seals on brake shaft, axles, PTO and tranny input shaft with single, new style (thinner) seals on several different tractors. I positioned each so the new seal lip runs on an unworn section of shaft. After several years of service I have yet to have one leak!

Ditto that, single seals will work just fine. Don't put in two seals, outer one will always be dry...
