When(what year) did I H get the rearends beefed up on these tractors 460/560? Were the earlier ones updated and is there a way to tell. I have 3 tractors with cabs and thought one of these diesels might be nice to rake hay or light jobs when the weather is nice. Thanks

The higher the serial number, the better. From the looks of the 460 parts book, tractors above serial number 11677 have most of the differential updates installed from the factory, while anything above 12825 should have all of the differential updates. Anything below those numbers will have a triangle stamped on the serial number tag if they have had the differential updated in the field. Anything above 19520 will have roller inner axle bearings/ball outer axle bearings. Anything lower than that could be updated, but might still have ball inner bearings. Looks like the 560 differential updates occured at serial number 23925. Once again, anything below that should have the triangle stamp if it has been updated. Anything above 31016 will have roller inner axle bearings/ball outer axle bearings, while anything below that might still have ball inner bearings. I doubt you will find any that haven't been updated. If they were going to fail, they would have 40 years ago.

Depends, I have a 460 that had roller inner bearings, without the triangle on the serial plate. As far as I was concerned, the inner bearings had too much play in them. I replaced them with--ball bearings, because I didn't want to pay $200 apiece for new roller bearings as opposed to $60 for ball bearings, and the tractor will not see heavy work. Will last me forever. The next owner, if there is one may have problems if it sees heavy usage, will see the ball bearings and think it was never upgraded. So even with the triangle, the only way to tell is to look inside.

CNKS, the triangle was stamped after updating the differential. The axle bearing thing was a totally different update. I do agree that the inner ball bearings should last if you aren't doing any pulling.

When they were updated, there was a triangle shape added to the serial number tag, hand stamped into it. I was told that the road crew who did the updates marked them this way. I have had a couple of 460s that this was done to, and marked that way.
