I am helping a friend with his project which is now at my place.
We need to replace the temp gauge, since the one in place is rusty and shot. I have another to put in (non-IH, it works, given to us by another person, it came out of an M.

My question is, what do I need to do in order to change this, hood is off of course, do I need to drain the coolant out to do this? And what else?

Thanks a bunch

Sounds like a good time to change the antifreeze if it has been a while since he did it. Otherwise there's not much to changing the gauge.

If your M has a non-leaking radiator pressure cap, you do it with the motor cold, and you it QUICKLY, you can swap out the gage bulb without draining the system and will lose only a splash of coolant.

Keep in mind the original bulb screws into an odd, straight thread female x 1/2"(?) IPT male reducing bushing that's screwed into the head. Depending on the threading on your replacement gage bulb you may need to swap that bushing too.

Bob M is on the money with that bushing item. Several different thread pitches on the retaining nut that screws into the reducer bushing. I recommend if you are going to try this without draining the coolant down that you cut the old guage's connecting tube/line and get the old gauge out of the hole up by the steering rod support. Feed the line from the new gauge through the gauge hole first so you can mount the gauge in that bracket without having to unscrew the sensor bulb from that bushing the second time. If a new bushing came with the new gauge make sure you put some pipe dope on the male threads that screw into the head if you cannot re-use the old bushing.

Farmer Bob - Good tip about cutting the capillary lead on the old gage, getting it out of the head hole and the new gage all lined up before you remove the old bulb!

Here's another: Have an old wine cork (or a buddy with a fat thumb) handy before you begin so you've got a way to stop the flow if you get the bulb out and the threads on the new one don't match...
