I installed a new battery on my Farmall M then when I tried to start my M which has not been started in a long time, the starter started to smoke. The engine would not turn over, it would bump but not turn over. I initially hooked the ground to the negative terminal on the battery, Thinking I put it in backwards I reversed and it did the same thing only this time it smoked from the regulator (I think it’s the regulator) it’s the black box located by the ignition switch. My two questions are where does chassis ground hook too on the battery, positive or negative? If my engine was locked up would it make the starter smoke? Thanks, hope someone knows the answer….

No, the idiot holding the starter button down even though the engine won't turn over is what causes the starter to smoke. Man alive, the things people do!!!

I may be an idiot for a lot of things but holding the starter down while the starter was smoking is not one of them. I had to un-hook the batery to stop it from smoking.

I am curious, what kind of tractor do you have?

You might have to pull the starter because if the starter is stuck in the engine will never turn over till you disengauge the starter.. I bought a 140 once locked up tight as a drum put oil in cylinders for 2 weeks still no good. So I thought I will pull the starter and try to pry on the ring gear.. Well I found the biggest mouse nest I ever saw and it had wrapped in the starter gear and flywheel so starter was engaged and would not turn .. Then tractor started right up I sold it to buy a M and a H and still had money for a $60 basket case...

Positive ground, the starter doesn't care, the regulator, if designed for 6 volts positive ground, won't last as long with negative ground. A starter won't crank a stuck engine--something has to give, thus the smoke. Put the tractor in 5th gear and try to move it by pushing on the rear tire, see if the fan turns, if not it's stuck. It is possible that the starter is jammed against the ring gear, loosen the starter and push on the wheel. If the engine is loose, clean all your connections and reassemble. Take it out of gear. If the starter doesn't work then you have a starter problem. You may have ruined your regulator, also, but that shouldn't keep the starter from working.
