My cousin is looking at a 53 Super M with factory LP and was wondering if it were a rare tractor. If anybody could help I would aprreciate it. Also a guess on value, it does not run but is not stuck and the metal is fair and complete.

Okay, let's sort this one out from the other responses.

Yes, IH built Super M LPs. Yes, they built them in their own factories. I doubt very much that the tractors sent out for conversion counted against IH production numbers for LPs.

Yes, actually the production figures DO EXIST for those tractors by fuel type- they came into the WHS archives in 2001. Contact the Wisconsin Historical Society for the numbers.

Odis, Big John is as lost as a goose in a snow storm on this point. The First factory IH tractors were on the Stage II series, Super Ms. This LP system is like the one on the SW6 in Guys Fays Book. The one with the crosswise tank with the valves faceing rearward. The Stage III Super Ms had a different tank though. It was a longwise tank, with the valves being a monovalve unit at the rear of the tank at the 11:00 position (while sitting in the seat).
The first true LP heads were not produced untill the Number series. That might be where Big John is comming from and on that I will yeild to that point. Procuction number are sketchy at best. IH didn't keep #s on the fuel types only total # of tractors made. We do know that there were 500 of the SMTA, LPs made they were the ones that were sent to Lubbock, and San Angelo, Texas to the LP Tank Co. to be completed.
The SMTA tractor is a Stage III tractor it didn't matter if it was fuled with Gas, DSL,or LP. Hope this helps.
A good non-running tractor , If me start at $350 and work your way up. Should be bought at about $500 to $700. If you get it bought I have the mane of a place where you can get new LP diaphrams for the carb and vaporizer.
Later,
John A.

John

Saw this thread. Where is the place that has the diaphragms?? I am assuming you are talking about parts for the ensign brand.

I work on quite a few of those units and have been making my own with only modest success.

Looking forward to your reply. My e-mail is open.

jt

There were NO factory propane letter model tractors made, A,B,C,H,M's. All of these tractors that are now on LP, were converted in the field. The first IH tractor that was offered on LP was the 300.
