We purcahsed and restored this 41 H about ten years ago, the engine at that time worked fine, so we stripped it down put some new paint and tires and a few samll parts but did nothing internaly to the engine. The H will still start and run fine but it spits little oil droplets out the stack. Does anyone know exactly what the problem is. I have heard valve guide or rings, what do you think? Any info would be appreciated.

Dump Champion D21 Spark Plugs in her. The higher heat range will keep the combustion chamber cleaner and less oil-Fowled.

I don't know if this has anything to do with your problem or not but about 40 years ago my dads H did the same thing and dad wanted to know what I had done to it. The first he asked was whether or not I had checked the oil level recently, which I had done, then he wanted to know if I had added any oil, which I also had done. I told him I had added two quarts, just like I did for the 3020 John Deere when it was low. Adding two quarts to an H that is only one quart low will result in oil being spit out the exhaust, a lesson learned quite well.

I think the other guys have it right. Close the shutters and take it up the road about 5 miles and back , that'll clean out the slobber in the muffler, watch you heat guage and once it is in "RUN" open the shutters about a third, if you don't have shutters wrap a blanket around the grill and warm it up...good luck...Mike in Exeter Ontario

Allan's hit the nail on the head. My SH does the same thing when she's cold, makes a mess on the hood. It's just condesation and some carbon from the muffler. If yours was burning that much oil you would have a cloud of blue smoke and she'd be fouling spark plugs.

Mike I also have a 41 H and just as Allen said if you dont load her up and burn the carbon out she,ll spit what looks like oil. I would do some work with her and see if she clears up

Hey Mike!

Not to question your judgement, but are you really sure it is oil? My old "H the Harrier" will spit a little black carbon/moisture if I don't work it hard and just putz around with it.

I'd take 'er out and make sure it gets good and warmed up and make 'er pull a little. Maybe there is nothing at all wrong with it.

Dunno,

Allan
