I have a Super A with this distributor mounted on it. It seems odd that it is vertical when all other Super As I have looked at are horizontal.
Distributor is a Delco and model is (as best I can make out)1111411. I don't think it is original equipment, and can I still get parts for it? I am going to post another close up picture in Parts and Pieces.
Appreciate any help and info.
Robbie

Robbie, I had a 1952 M that had a 90 degree angle and distributer like that one on your A. But my M had a hydraulic pump made by Webster Electric mounted in the hole where the distributer should have been. It's the only Webster Electric brand pump I have ever seen. I just always thought the 90 degree adapter came with the W.E. to keep the distributer from hitting the oil filter. I think it would have without the adapter. I have been a daily visitor to YT about 16 months now, and I have never heard anyone mention a Webster Electric live hydraulic pump on a M or H. Did I have the only one ever made? thanks. Steve Norwood.

Had a neighbor with one IH dealer said he couldn't get them. He walked in to the auto parts store & ask for AC WD points ( there the same)

Take the number from the plate on the distributor to a good auto parts store and they should be able to look up the points and condensor that fit it.

You usually can't get points from your IH dealer, but it's the same distributor used on Massey Ferguson combines, so I get my parts from a Massey dealer.

Robbie: My understanding is these units came about as a result of farmers wanting to change from Mag. to distributor ign. The Delco after market distributor was much less expensive than going to IH for an IH original. Those who have them like them very much. Only thing I could see wrong with it, is you do have an extra 90 degree turn in that distributor drive, thus there must be gears in there an IH original wouldn't need. I guess one shouldn't knock that as I've never heard any complaints on that being a problem.

I guess it's just that most vertical distributors we are use to are driven direct from cam shaft rather than through timing and governor drive gears.

As near as I can tell the Delco distributor was used when converting from the original magneto. Parts are available but sometimes the parts man will get confused when you ask for a set of points for the Delco on a Farmall, apparently most of the parts books list only the I.H. distributor for a Farmall. I believe that the Case and Allis Chalmers tractors with a distributor used the Delco from the factory, and should use the same set of points, rotor, etc., so if the parts man can't find a listing for yours, just tell him to look under Case or Allis.

I have one of these on an H. Parts are easy to find. I like them because the points are easier to change. It extends up under the hood which protects it from moisture.

My 1946 A is exactly the same as yours. I think the "horizontal distributor" you have seen was actually a magneto..... ..Stan

Some Delco dist units were retrofitted to replace magnetos some were factory. They came three ways, IH (horizontal), Delco (vertical), or magneto (horizontal).

Certainly IH used Delco distributors, but did the factory ever put out the vertical one?

IH made their own distributors. They did not use the Delco vertical distributor from the factory, at least as far as the Super A goes. IH did offer a changeover kit to convert from mag to battery ignition. Consisted of an IH distributor, two pole ignition switch and necessary wiring. My Super A had one of these kits added, I have converted it back to the IH mag.

It was an aftermarket addition, probably on a tractor with a magneto.

Parts should be available at local auto parts stores. Mix and match.

Thats my opinion also. It looks real close to the one Pa replaced the mag on our wd with. He was tired of referbishing the old mag and us kids hated to see him come in the house with it. We each had to take a plug wire and dad would spin the mag and see who didnt yelp to know what cyl wasnt firing. Ma didnt like it eather.

Wow! Thanks for the input everybody. I thought I might have had an oddball that would having me searching for points and condenser, now I know I can go to Case/IH. MF, Agco, or any good autoparts store and get them. What a wealth of knowledge out there!
