My SM takes 13 gal in the trans which also includes the rear end.

The hydraulic system takes 6 quarts.

There are two drains for the transmission and differential which drain together. They look like pipe plugs on the rear very bottom on the centerline of the tractor. The forward one points to the front and is down below the battery or maybe slightly aft. The back one points to the rear and is right below the PTO shaft. My M manual states the quantity to fill the tractor is 13 gals. of SAE-90 transmission lubricant. You should pick you up an owners manual as this is all covered very clearly. When you replace the drain plugs put some teflon plumbing tape on them to eliminate a constant small oil drip. Someone already provided you a post with the fill location on the platform which requires a 3/4" drive socket extension. Good Luck.

The drain plug for the M tranny is on the back of the tractor just down from the PTO,the plug you removed is to help drain the oil from the front end of the tranny,NOT the hydraulic system, which had its own plug on the bottom of the pump and points down.the fill plug is to the right of the shifter.once you have rained it all out, look on the clutch side of the tranny youll see a plug about half way up,remove it and fill with the lube youre using, should take about 13 gallons!

The plug that is on the side is the oil level plug, put the gear oil in until it comes out of that plug.

The fill should be at the right hand side of the shifter On the top cover. Like a 3/4" ratchet fits it. I am not sure on an M but my H took 6 Gal so The M will probly take 8 or more . Fill to plug thats about half way up the side of the tranny on the LH side as your sitting on seat. JON

It's been a while since I dealt with one, but your description sounds like the hydralic system, not the transmission. The transmiion is under the deck at your feet, and ends at the front of the deck.

Does it have a belt drive ? Thats kinda still the tranny so the check plug would be on the L side under that I guess. If its got a belly pump for the HYD I beleve the drain plug faces the rear for that. Its to cold to go out and check all for sure. JON

Yes that sounds right you drained the tranny. There is a larger drain in the rear at the bottom of the case that points to the rear that will drain the final drive or bull gears. So if thats all you drained it may not take much to fill it I dont know if you would have got it all out that way. JON
