I recently acquired an original IH ignition coil that the seller believes is 12 volt. How can I bench test to see if it's 6 or 12??

I"m not sure if the part number is stamped on the coil anywhere, however, the part number for each is, #: 353874R91 for 6 volt and #: 353875R91 for 12 volt.

The 6-volt IH coil on my '51 H w/Delco distributor measured 1.3 to 1.5 ohms. I would expect a 12-volt coil to be nearly double that.

The resistances are different, I've seen them posted here but can't remember the numbers. Someone will know.

I"m sure someone can give you more details here that I, but here is a simplistic view that applies to our old 4 cyl engines.

The factory coils have 1-1/2 Ohms of primary resistance (measure across the two small terminals). At 6V that gives 4 Amps across the points (E=IR). The 12V coil needs 3 Ohms to maintain the 4 Amps at the points. A 1-1/2 Ohm coil on a 12V system draws 8 Amps at the points which is why they burn up faster.

If that IH coil has a P/N, your IH dealer can probably tell from the P/N whether it's 6 or 12 volts. Hal

Wasnt the original coil a Delco Remy?
My '55 still had the original 6V coil on it even though they installed a 12V battery (no resistor)..how it ran like that for so long is beyond me (no charging system so it was a "total loss" system)but it fried itself before I bought it.It still had some red paint on it from the factory.

IH used a lot of Delco Remy generators, starters
and ignition parts. They may have had some made
by Delco with IH on them. It's probably a 6 volt
coil. My first 12 volt car was a 57 Chevy. Come to think of it, I still have a new set of original intake and exhaust valves for the 283cid engine. Their cost now is $600.00. My how prices have risen. Hal

If it has the primary connecitons on one end and the secondary on the other you can bet it is 6v.

I'm not sure you can test it by measuring with an ohm meter, maybe someone will correct me.

I'd put it on a good-running 12v tractor with a resistor and if it puts out good spark it is a 6v coil.

Most coils are 6v. Chevy had their resistor wire and Ford had an internal resistor but the coil was really 6v so I don't think Smart Guy's suggestion would work. After you cut it apart you'd look for a resistor.

YOU HAVE TO CUT IT IN HALF AND COUNT THE RINGS LIKE A TREE.
