I am working on an H4 mag. I measure about 9,600 ohms on coil secondary. Is this ok? (Note: I do get spark out of the mag, but if there is any question on the coil, I'd rather replace it now before I put it on my tractor.)

I have found most good H-4 coils test around 12K. The new ones test about 12K too. I have had two that would work OK cold but not hot and they checked under 10K. Brian

You cannot get a true and complete coil test with an ohmmeter. Yes, it will tell you if a coil is BADLY shorted, but even if the resistance is near the correct range, even ONE SHORTED TURN in the coil will reduce it's "RINGING" (oscillating) when the points open, and the spark will be weaker than it should be.

Coil testers use this "ringing" phenomenon of a coil to judge how good it is.

Thanks. You may have confirmed what I suspected. I think I may have to replace the coil, the spark just doesn't seem as bright as I would expect.
