Any one ever wired on of these that use 2 6 volt batts so that when cranking it uses 24 volts to crank the engine. but other wise uses 12 for everything. A freind saidhe had it done on a perkins he had and I makes it start like a gas almost. If hear no negatives I may try it if I can the wiring diagram and parts used. He says no either or anything even in cold cold weather.

if you took 2 -12 volt and hooked them with a lead(3/8 i-let) positive to positive and neg to neg you will not have to change anything. 12 volts of bat and double the cranking.

Dave JD did use it for years and it is a pain more like a hemroid if you don't know what your doing you got a MESS some things + and some things - have to hock some things on one side and some on other. I would take the IH 12V any day. Not a true 24V like the 12V one ground and one hot.

Dave:
The guys are right a lot of semis run on the system you want. Why don't you take an hour and drop down to a tractor trailer service centre. Bet the guys there could draw it out on the back of an envelope for you!

I will make a suggestion stay away from the 24 volt if your deverter shorts out then you have a wire fire. I use 2 12 volt wire pos. to pos and neg to neg and I always use the gel batterys on all deisels it just makes life easer.

The military has used 24 volt systems for years.
Those diesels still need someway to preheat them prior to startup when it's very cold. Coolant or
block heaters are an excellent choice so you don't to use so much ether.

The Soviets have used them for years and they start like summer time at -65 degrees. Hal

Hi Dave,

Yep, John Deere has done that for years.

Allen, the Deere system, on the ag line anyway, was a true 24 Volt system. It charged the batteries at 24 Volts AND the starter operated off of 24 Volts. The 12 Volt lighting and gauge loads were split between the two halves of the system.

What Dave is talking about is using a series-parallel switch so the batteries are connected in PARALLEL for charging at 12 Volts and in SERIES for starting, at 24 Volts.

A diagram will NOT be hard to come by, because there were TONS of semis that used this system some years back, as well as construction and marine applications.

There is a LOT of wiring and detail needed to make this conversion, though!

The key here, Bob, is that you used the word "split". It is essential that you draw the same amount of load off one 12 volt side as you draw from the other. If you only connect your non-starting load to half the 24 volt battery bank, you will end up with uneven charging. How evenly you split the load will determine what kind of luck you have with this configuration.

Heck, I dunno Bob,

My hired man had a 5020 and he told me it charged 12 and cranked 24. Didn't pay much attention to it, tho.

If the 5020 REALLY charged 12 Volts and cranked 24, it was NOT a factory setup.

Then thats what I shall try. Just redid all the lights on the 544 last night. What a difference. I really want to get away from using either as the it only has about 3200 hours buts crankc over sooo slow.

I forgot to mention the tractor would be equiped with 2 -12v Batts as opposed to 6v

be careful you dont mess up your starter and silonoid as you are doubling your voltage, unless you buy a 24v silonoid and have your your starter rewound

Thanks. I know he said ya change the solenoid, but I belive the starter stayed the same since apparently ya never have to crank more that 5 sec.
