Agustus: The table for my Farmall 130 calls for 30W above 80F, 20W from 80F down to 32F and 10W below below 32F. As others have said that book came before multi grade oils. I must admit I use 15W-40, same as in crankcase. Book doesn't recommend that either.

I use 15W-40 in everything; car, pickup, tractors, 4 cycle lawn mower. Lawn mower is 30 years old and has mowed, I expect on average 1/4 acre per year every year. Got 400,000 miles out of a 6.2 Chevy diesel, as near as I know it may still be going.

Manuals for almost all older machines say to use the same as in the crankcase.

I've never for sure figured out if this applies to multi-weight oils since they didn't exist then. However, I use m-w in my SM, my JD 60 and Ford 641, works well.

If a lighter weight oil is used it may get pulled up into the carb.

You can use the same oil as what you put in the engine.
