Farmall C Demonstrator

Guys,
I bought a 1950 Farmall C (SN # FC 47218)about a month ago. I have been working on it to get it running again, and have found quite a bit of white paint under the red on the engine, transmission, generator, wire harness, and just about everywhere. I know there were some Farmall C demonstrators. Is there any way to confirm whether this tractor was a demonstrator, or am I just getting excited over some primer/filler on the castings?

Dale

The "accepted" range of C demo serials is 47010-54411. To each his own, but when I found mine was originally white, I repainted it red anyway -- I have to look at it everyday, to me Farmalls should be red, I do not like white. Saw one advertised for $10000 once -- no way, it's just white paint. To answer your question -- yes. My source is Richard Lantis, an expert on white and gold demos, he used to be an IH dealer, and actually nearly rolled a white C while delivering it to one of his dad's customers (he took over his dad's business) when he was 10-12 years old. He did this as he turned into the customer's driveway. He was told not to use 4th, but did anyway.

Thanks for the info. I actually bought this tractor to resell. Now that there is a good possibility that it is a demonstrator, I need to decide whether to sell it or keep it. You're right, it is just paint. But it does make it more unique than just an average C. I would guess it might be worth more to some buyers knowing it was a white demonstrator?

I suppose it is worth more, if you find the right person. If you do paint it, do it correctly. You might try advertising it on this site or in Red Power Magazine, without repainting it, and up the price over a regular C in the same condition, by say, $500-$1000 (only a guess). My opinion is that purists may prefer to do the tractor themselves. I am not a 100% dyed in the wool purist, but since I have a lot of time, I would much rather buy old rusty tractors and do a good job of repainting them myself, rather than someone else's lousy paint job. If you do know how to paint and want to take the time to do it right, and completely restore the tractor, then it may be more valuable to the "right" buyer -- but, you won't get your money back.

I agree. There are alot of "restorations" out there that I would feel compelled to redo. I think I can do a pretty good job on the restoration, if I choose to go through with it. There are some guys out there that are just incredible though.

I wouldn't restore it to sell. I still have every tractor I've restored. Once putting that much time and effort in to do it right, it's hard to let them go!

Yeah, I get sentimentaly attached to them, I remember all the work I put into them, and as to actual dollars, they are only worth about 1/3 of what I put into them, so I don't sell.
