I posted earlier today about a super m or m engine. I found out from you all, by the way thanks a bunch, that the engine is from an M and was placed on a super M. So i want to get an overhaul kit for it, but it asks if the crank journals are large or small, for the bearings. How do I tell this? What are the sizes of the large and small journals?? thnx

The rod journals could be 2.4975-2.4985" or 2.5475-2.5485". The mains are 2.7475-2.7484" or
2.8075-2.8085". These are the measurements for
crankshafts when installed in the tractors new.
They may have ground your shaft undersize or it could be worn undersize from use. Have a machine shop to measure the shaft it could be egg-shaped. You do not want to be guessing, you either pay now or pay later if you have too much clearance or not enough on those bearings. It will run another 50 years with proper care. Hal

I answered below on how to tell which crank.I could look up journal size if needed,or if the bearings have a IH # on back post it.Someone on here could probably cross other brands also.

Bert,

When you pull the engine down, look on the back of the inserts. They will have the undersize marked on 'em if the crank has been turned down.

Also, many machinists' will stamp the undercut right on one of the crank's throws.

Otherwise, they should be marked with just a part # denoting standard size bearings.

You should mic the journals as a matter of course, anyway tho.

Allan
