I"m restoring a super M LP tractor and wanted to use the centari paint on it this time. I"ve been using it on cars with great success. I just need the correct color code for it. The guys at the paint place ain"t much help. They Don"t even know what a farmalll is! How will this stuff hold up on the engine BTW? It"s gonna be a worker after all.

IH 2150 crosses to DuPont 96766 -- Any DuPont dealer can mix it. The engine will never get hot enough to damage the paint, only the exhaust manifold. Since you have automotive experience, the only difference between cars and tractors is that the old finish on cars "usually" just needs to be sanded and sealed, on your tractor there is likely rust below the paint, and the last time it was painted was probably a hurry-up job, so it probably needs to be stripped. As you know Centari is excellent paint, no comparison between it and CIH dealer paint.

Thanks for the reply. I'm a gunsmith by night and a mechanic by day. So I am sandblasting everything I can fit in my blast cabinet and all the rest of it I am gonna get the big blaster out on in the driveway. It will give me something to get rid of all the worn out sand I have collected from the blast cabinet. It gets too fine after a while for the kind of finish I do on guns so it goes in a barrel for later use in the yard. Anyway, I can't wait to get this thing going. I only paid a hundred bucks for it and so far, aside from the rusted stuck sleeves it's in really great shape. Mechanicly anyway. I am still doing a complete overhaul on it though. I just now pulled the water plate off the left side and it's relatively clean in there. A little scale but no rust thankfully. It still had some antifreeze in it luckily. I just can't make up my mind about keeping it LP or going to gas. It's got the High compression head on it and I am probably gonna put new firecrator pistons in it. I used them when I restored my super C and love them! If anyone has a source for a good gas tank and carb or wants to do some horse trading of propane for gas parts then I'd definitly switch it to gas. The junk yards here only have LP tractors pretty much.

Steel Wheel Ranch will have a good used gas tank, probably a carb, also -- 785-548-7437 (not open on Sunday). But, if that is factory LP, your tractor will be more valuable if you restore it to it's original condition. I don't think there are many original factory LP's left, nor did IH build very many, as when IH went to 6 cylinders in 1958, diesel was becoming more popular.

How would I tell if it is a factory LP unit? It seems to have all the bells and whistles except for the fast hitch and belt pully. It's a charlyn PS steering unit that looks factory installed and the tank looks like it was made for a factory fit but some of the cuts on the shroud piece that go around the valves and stuff on the rear of it are crude torch cuts. Maybe a farmer mod for whatever reason on that. The vaporizer and carb say Ensign on them. My gas company says they are no longer in business but they can get me new parts that will work if needed.

Hey DSS, Get that order info from your gas company. The parts for the Ensign LP are getting VERY hard to find. It would be great if we could find another source.

DSS, The tank arrangement (factory) is crosswise. If field conversion it will probably be longwise. So I need pics or a very good description to tell you correctly. I have seen SM-LP with aftermarket systems. Hollar back I will give you my best take from your info.
Later,
John A.

The serial number is F-50256NJ
Model SM
Chicago, Illinois

Thanks again

The N is for the 2500 ft and up elevation LPG attachment, which fits the elevation where you are. I bought an H in Amarillo in 1998, I believe. Needs a lot of work, keep putting other tractors in front of it.

DSS, What ya'll have is a Stage II, Factory LP, Super M. The crosswise tank, live-hydrolics, resovoir is under-the-tank, Super C seat (Batt under the seat),
I am looking at SM-LP #49421 CJ down here in Texas.
The J indicates a Rockford Clutch. Can't find my codes tonight on the C,N nomenclature
Anyway hope this helps.
Later,
John A.

Thanks! What's the stage 2 mean though? I never heard of that before. Also are the rockford clutches as good on these as I remember them on big trucks?

The first SM's had the same non-live belly pump as the M. The "stage 2" has the live pump in front of the distributer, hyd reservoir under the gas tank, and the battery under the seat, along with some other minor differences. My personal opinion is to leave the tractor original, you will have a nice tractor when it is done. Also if you change it, the N designation on the serial tag will be wrong, although it will still designate it as originally being LP.

Where are you located I could use some parts for my Super M LP? Maybe some the salvage yards in your area will have what I need.

If you don't have any pictures, my understanding is that the factory tank is crossways rather than longways as in most conversions, although I have read it was longways on the Super MTA. The Chassis serial number should have a C or N suffix. Fast hitch was not available on the Super M or SMTA, but the rear housing was drilled for it on the MTA. But, I have never seen a factory model.
